CD Walkman to the Nth

Pros Thin, lightweight, and very attractive design. Solid construction. Does not skip.
Cons Expensive. Poor headphones.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The D-EJ925 is expensive, but the portability, durability, and great styling may make it worth it. A portable CD player doesn't do any good if it gets left at home.
I bought my first Sony CD Walkman/Discman in 1984. It was clunky and a bit heavy, but the user interface was straightforward and the unit was solidly built. (It's still running today -- 17 years later!) The D-EJ925 is that Discman taken to its logical conclusion: streamlined down but solidly built and including all of the essential features and more.

The CD player itself has a magnesium alloy shell, keeping it very lightweight while offering far better durability than your average plastic housing. The downside to this is that the controls on the player are a narrow ridge of buttons along the outside edge of the unit -- workable, but difficult to use if you've got big fingers. The remote control makes up for some of this, offering a "jog dial" style control on one end of a cylinder that's as big around as an AA battery and just slightly longer. Also on the remote is a backlit display showing the time, track, and other playback settings, and a spring clip to attach the remote to a backpack or article of clothing.

The unit also offers something not found on very many portable CD players: CD-Text support, which displays artist and track information (on the LCD display on the remote) while the disc is playing, if that info is available on the CD. Unfortunately I haven't yet been able to get this to work, however I've only tried it with CD-R's, which may not have the CD-Text information encoded correctly.

The sound on this unit has been very good (as expected) and so far it hasn't skipped once, even when mountain biking over some rough terrain. The remote is very convenient, putting all of the controls at hand even when the CD player itself is stashed away in your pack.

Although the player and remote are excellent, the accompanying accessories don't quite reach that mark. The headphones are disappointing, looking and sounding like something you'd expect to get with a $49 player instead of a $199 player. The carrying case is well made, but poorly designed, fitting so tight that getting the player in and out to change discs is a real headache. The case also has no provision for storing the remote, which would have been very welcome given how easily the plastic over the LCD display on the remote can be scratched.

Battery life is very good. The unit comes with an AC adapter/charger and a pair of rechargeable "stick of gum" shaped batteries, and after the first charge I've gotten a very welcome 25-35 hours of play before needing to plug it in again.
