The Bottom Line:
If you want a nice portable CD player, this is as cool as they come.
I bought this CD player on a vacation after my Sony D-FJ61 broke. I wasn't too upset over my old one at the time; I wanted one with a remote and I like an excuse to buy new electronics.
I was impressed with this player as soon as I took it out of the package. It is about as small as a CD player could be, almost the same shape and only a little thicker than a jewel case. Not only is it small, but it's great looking. The case is aluminum, somewhat roughened, and very elegant, with no extraneous details. The latch is nice and stiff, and it won't pop open accidentally. The lid meets the base snugly and doesn't rattle as in my old D-FJ61, which makes it seem sturdier. The rechargeable batteries are safely tucked away on the inside of the case. There is a row of small operation buttons on the right side, as well as the headphone/remote plug, optical out line, and power plug. Personally I like having all the plugs and controls on the same side, so I like this aspect of the design.
I love the remote, it has the programming buttons, sound and pause, and volume and tracks are controlled by a twisting top. You turn it a bit either way to track forwards or back, and pull it out to adjust volume the same way. (It is easy to do with one hand.)
The remote also is nicely backlit and lights up whenever you operate it. (you can disable this feature if you want.)
The sound is the same as every portable Sony CD player I have ever heard.
The player has G-Protection, meaning you really have to be trying to make it skip for it to do so.
The battery life is very good. I was initially upset by the external battery case. (Holds 2 AA, plugs in power socket.) I thought I would need to use the external case to get a good battery life, and it made the unit kind of unwieldly.
Fortunately I soon discovered that the internal rechargeable batteries last plenty long enough. I have used them for over 8 hours, and they would have gone longer.
What's better, is they're FREE. You just plug the AC adapter in, hit the "charge" button on the player, and it recharges them. It shuts off automatically, so you don't have to worry about over-charging. The charge time is fast compared with standard rechargeable AA's I used to use with my old CD player; it took only a few hours the one time I was awake when I was recharging. When the batteries wear out (if you don't lose the player first :) ) you can replace them.
There are only two things I didn't like. First, the headphones it came with are junk. This is to be expected though.
Second, the jog case is a dumb design. It covers the buttons on the player, forcing you to use a remote. This wouldn't really be a problem, but if you're jogging you don't want a remote wire going up your sleeve with the remote clipped somewhere and then another wire to the headphones.. it's a mess.
Also, it's a pain to slip the player in the case, so it takes a long time to change the CD. It would be much better if it was zippered so you could unzip it and flip the lid up easily.
Aside from the case, I am completely satisfied with this CD player. It's the coolest one I've ever seen, and for what you get, a great deal.
