Discman with a Radio
Pros
Good sound, good value. Good reliability.
Cons
Looks cheap with metallic finish, no included rechargeable battery.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
As a basic CD-Radio personal player it has performed extremely well. Sound quality is good and the life of the rechargeable battery has been excellent.
As someone who has used Walkmans which are radio only or radio/cassette one of the things that had disappointed me is the relative lack of availability of CD/radio personals. The best range comes from Sony and this player (which retails for around $100) seems very good.
On the positive side, the buffer memory (ESP2) seems to work well and the radio is good quality. Sound on the CD is excellent and the included headphones are reasonable.
One downside of this unit is that it does not have a rechargeable battery included as standard and the life of a pair of AAs is only about 5 hours of CD playback. I recommend getting a rechargeable battery (I got the longer lasting one from Sony for $35). Worth noting is that the next model up, the DF415 includes a rechargeable battery and remote control on the headphones and retails for only $20 more. I'm also less than enamored with the silver finish but the Sony range offers the wide-ranging choice of yellow or silver for Radio Discmans!
Update July 14 2002 - Not much to add. The Discman is still working well and the reliability has been excellent. and after this long, the rechargeable battery has been a good investment. And prices of new models keep falling.
