Perfect for Vehicle Use

Pros The Rotary Remote Is the Highlight
Cons Nicad batteries, short headphone cord
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The wired rotary remote allows for one handed operating in a car, while allowing you to keep your eyes on the road.
I received this cd player as a Christmas gift. If I had purchased a player on my own, I likely would have selected a more inexpensive unit. However, I am very pleased with the D-MJ95 so far. The unit is designed to be used in a vehicle and comes with a cigarette lighter power adapter, cassette sound adapter and wired remote control.

The best feature of the D-MJ95 is the rotary remote control, which allows you to start, stop, ff, reverse, and skip forward and backwards between tracks. The remote comes with a very generously long cord, which allows you to leave the player on the floor of the car if you wish, while still leaving enough slack to comfortably use the wired remote. The remote is controlled by rotating a large tapered knob. The whole remote unit is shaped to be comfortable in your hand. The return spring on the controller is just strong enough to give a good positive feel so that you cannot accidentally trigger it. The knob has a good texture molded into it, so that there is enough friction for one handed operation.

As far as the unit itself, it is attractive, with a faux carbon fibre look to the cover.

At night, when plugged into the cigarette lighter, the unit lights up in a nice soft on the eyes red light, which is a nice touch.

Sony calls its shock protection G-Protection. I was not able to determine either on the box or instructions, how many seconds of electronic anti-shock are built into the unit. I am not a runner, so I don't know how it would work while jogging, but in my car it works perfectly and I have never experienced a skip.

The other controls on the unit are less successful. The switch to open the lid is small and difficult to find when you are concentrating on the road and relying on the sense of touch to find it.

Volume control is via two buttons a + and a -. I prefer a rotary dial which I find are easier to use and adjust. The major controls of play, stop, forward and reverse are large and provide a positive click when pressed so you know when you have pressed them. The minor control buttons for the play mode, repeat, and sound are nicely styled into the lid, but are on the small side and difficult to use while driving.

The low points of the D-MJ95 is Sony's use of Nicad rechargeable batteries. They haven't failed on me yet. However, like all Nicads, I expect that it will suffer from memory effects and will eventually fail. I wish Sony had used nickel metal hydride or lithium-ion rechargeables instead, since they have no memory effects.

The supplied headphones provide decent sound, but the cord is too short for convenient use. I got "ear bud" style headphones included with my unit instead of the headphones shown on the epinions page.
