Introduction
A few months ago, I purchased the Sony D-NF610 AM/FM/TV/MP3/weatherband CD player. Since I didn't need something as sophisticated as say an Ipod at the time, I decided to go ahead and upgrade from the Aiwa CD player to a more upscale, more feature loaded model. I went through the process I usually do when buying basically anything new (electronics especially), researching, reviewing, and analyzing which model had the best value, reliability, and best met my needs. After all the research and analyzing, I finally came to the conclusion that the Sony D-NF610 had the best overall package for the money. G-Shock Skip Protection, an AM/FM radio, a TV band, a weather band, great MP3 playback, and an excellent company to back it all up. Sure, I may not use every feature, but hey, it's there when I need it. Anyway, I checked out which stores had it(basically all of the major ones did), and ended up buying it from sears. The package was ridiculously hard to get into, but when I did, I quickly got it going. Here are my thoughts on everything.
Basic Features
So far, I haven't regretted getting this CD player one bit. It does everything I need it to do almost perfectly.
To start with, the battery life is fantastic. The Sony website says it can go 75 hours during Atrac playback and 48 hours during CD playback. I don't doubt either of those figures. It can take rechargeable batteries instead of the typical batteries if you'd like, but it's not as critical since the batteries last so long.
The sound quality is top notch, very sharp and clear, rarely ever distorted. The Mega Bass really adds to it. In fact, the mega bass on this CD player is definitely at the top of its class. A big plus is that it's 3 way adjustable (OFF-1-2), allowing the user to adjust it based on the kind of music you're listening to.
Regarding the AM/FM/TV/Weather band part of the unit, I'd say that it works very well overall. The reception is usually great; picking up most stations very well. You can store 30 radio stations for the radio, allowing you to get to the station you desire more quickly. Though I didn't figure I'd use the TV function much, it has come in handy sometimes. Whether catching a sports game, or listening to your favorite show, it works well and gives it an advantage over other models without it.
MP3/Atrac playback
One of the best features on this CD player is its ATRAC3Plus, ATRAC3, and MP3 playback. I'm sure most of you know what the MP3 playback means, so I won't go into that too much, but what's unique to this player is the ATRAC3PLUS and ATRAC3 encoding offered only on Sony models. Using the included sonic stage software that comes with the unit; you can get up to 490 songs on a single disc (assuming you use the 48kbps music quality). I can testify to that, as I got over 20 Cds of music on one disc. If you use a CDRW disc, you can keep adding music on to the disc, which really works out well for those who like keeping their music up to date. OF course it's not as complex as an MP3 player like the Ipod, but with the features it has, it will work fine until you can upgrade to something like that. It also features ID3 tagging and a two line dot matrix display, letting you easily see the Song, artist, and album of the song you're listening to. The Jog dial, which is a small rotary dial on the front of the unit, is awesome, allowing you to quickly get to the song(s) you want.
Negatives
I've told you the positives and what I love about the Unit, now for the very few negatives.
1st, this CD does not have the ability to program (allowing you to select certain songs to listen to). That was a feature I enjoyed having on the Aiwa and its nice to be able to select the song order. 2nd, the play, stop/off, forward, and back buttons are way too close to each other. I keep turning the player off, when I intend to go to the next song. 3rd, the headphones that come with it are real cheap (most headphones that come with CD players are though). That problem was easily solved by getting a pair of Sony W*ear headphones (MDR-Q22LP). Lastly, I'd like the display to be backlit so that it's easy to view, regarding of the lighting situation in the surrounding areas.
Final thoughts
Other than the few negatives I've listed, I can't see where it can be changed much. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone and can't see a better value than this. All in all, if I had to do it again, I would definitely go with the Sony D-NF610. Sony is known for there success with electronics and they got it right with this.
