Deja-Vu. Sony ain't my hero.

Pros Supposedly tough, interesting play/stop buttons
Cons Bad sound. Headphones may not fit you.
Recommended it? No
Good ol' Sony. Always making sure I won't damage my ears by limiting the amp on their top of the line Sports Discmans. Why can't they be like cigarette companies and let me damage myself? (The answer is: "If I go deaf, I won't buy any more of their discmans")

Just like the D-SJ15, the D-SJ01 couldn't play loud music to save it's life. Bass boost is effectively useless as it will distort the sound quite easily. However, because this product has a digital volume meter, I can tell you exactly when you'll hit problems. Volume is between 0-9, with .3 intervals between the numbers (eg. 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 1.0, and so on). At 8.1, the sound is as loud as you can go without distortion. If you add in Bass Boost level 1, you need to turn the sound down to around 5.1. For Bass Boost level 2, you need to be around 3,1. So you can see that the consumer that doesn't feel like being limited to specific audio levels would throw this product in the trash. Sony claims that the music is 'digitally amplified with bass boost technology to prevent "analog distortion" '.

So we end up with digital distortion. As said in my other review, changing the headphones won't make a difference. Speaking of which, the streetstyle headphones will not fit you if you wear glasses (normal or sun glasses), and that's the type it comes with.

If you don't need a loud player, and want something nice to jog with, get the D-SJ15. It's cheaper, more solid (this model feels kind of cheap and ready to fall apart), and IMHO looks better.
