The Bottom Line:
Buy the C900 or one of its sister systems if you want a very good looking, simple-to-use system. I think the C900 provides great "bang for the buck" at $700-$750.
Right now, I'm kicking back in my living room enjoying my Sony DAV-C900 DVD Dream Home Theater System. I'm using digital cable to pipe in commercial free audio. I've now owned the C900 for just shy of a year, and this household has been very happy with it. I think that the quality of the system is excellent, especially as the price approaches less than $700. I paid about $725 a year ago at etronics.com and shipping was inexpensive or free. Their price is now $710.
I'm not averse to electronics at all, I'm an engineer, but I dislike crowded systems with multiple boxes. (Unlike my Dad who prefers separate components "in case something breaks" which only happens every other decade or so.) Plus, I have my C900 system hooked up to a 32" Sony Wega and inside of a Sony glass-front TV stand customized for the Wega, which rounds out the look. I use the system in my living room which is about 25' x 30' and it definitely fills the room and sounds good in the adjacent kitchen and sunroom.
DVD playback is excellent as far as I can tell (though changing disks is not as fast I'd like). Plus, I've thoroughly enjoyed the proprietary SACD format for audio CDs. SACD is a format which records music in true 5.1 sound (front L/R, center, rear L/R and subwoofer). I have SACDs of Yo-Yo Ma, Celine Dion, Billy Joel, Miles Davis, and a few samplers (including some complementary SACDs from Sony which arrived this Christmas, thank you very much Sony). I have the standard Celine Dion CD and the difference compared to the SACD is quite noticeable.
I admit that I have a fairly strong brand loyalty to Sony products, but, with the Sony Wega, this is, by far, my most expensive Sony purchase.
This system is neat, simple, easy-to-install (except the rear speaker wire, which, in order to run, as with most surround sound systems, you may have to drill holes in your floor or put the wires under your carpet), sounds great, and looks fantastic. Most of my friends comment favorable on the speaker stands and sleek look.
I also looked at the Bose 1-2-3 System which, at the time, was about the same price. Ultimately, I found the Sony for about $275 less and went this direction. I liked that the 1-2-3 didn't require drilling holes in my floor, but wasn't sure I'd like the simulated surround sound.
Originally, I found out about the Sony Dream systems and listened to the 500 and 700 at a local Best Buy and Circuit City. I didn't know about the 900 until I checked prices online. I took a chance and ordered the 900 having only listened to the 500 and 700. I'm a happy camper.
My model does not play CD-R's or mp3's, but I hear that the newer models do. You might want to seriously look at that upgrade as mp3's increase in popularity and prevalence.
I have the C900 connected to a Sony 32" Wega Trinitron TV. My review of the Wega may be found at this location:
