Home Theater System That Works
Pros
Very good sound quality, multi-function remote with day-glow face.
Cons
One disc at a time, too many remote buttons and the buttons are too small.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great sound for; good price. Choose if you don't need lots of discs at once and you have limited speaker space but the desire for big sound.
I bought this sound system about 4 years ago. I have loved it the entire time I have owned it. DVD's sound truly amazing. The first time I used it we were watching the Sound of Music and the scene with the thunder and lightning actually frightened my young kids because it sounded so realistic to them. Let me try to break down some of its better features in categories:
Playability: This system plays a lot of different CD's without any trouble. I have used multiple burn formats and it always reads them and plays them well. I have never had trouble with it reading DVD's unless the DVD itself was damaged.
Sound: The sound on this is truly amazing considering the actual size of the speakers. It puts out very high quality sound and packs quite a punch. Even though the subwoofer is passive, it still does a nice job of creating those low noises that make for great explosions, action sequences and other things like that. One really nice thing about the sound is that you can turn this thing all the way up to full blast (I like loud music) and it does not distort at all. It will rattle the windows but not deafen you with poor sound quality. My wife laughs at me b/c when she comes home after I have been home alone, she can hear the stereo before she turns in the drive even when the windows are up on her car.
Ease of Use: This is probably the weakest feature of the Sony. I don't like the delay involved with turning the unit on and I don't like how long it can take to start a DVD. The remote is pretty handy because it has a day-glo face, so even when the lights are out you can still find it. Another nice feature is that you can program the Sony remote to also run the TV, which I find pretty handy considering my tv is an RCA.
Features: Besides what I have already mentioned, the Sony has some slick features that are worth noting. One nice feature is the headphone setup because you can choose to use headphones for surround sound 2.1 or for stereo depending on whether you want to watch a movie or listen to music. I like that feature b/c as I said, I like loud music but my wife doesn't. The other nice feature to note is the preset amplification features. It has a bunch of different presets for surround sound, and also can be set to live, rock, pop and also has an Auto cofiguration that I like to use most of the time.
As I said, this system plays almost any sound file, but the drawback is that this is a one disc system and so you have to be prepared to change the disk often if you want a lot of variety.
