The Sony DAV-S500 is a complete ?home theater in a box? that includes a DVD/CD player that features SACD playback, four surround speakers, a center speaker and a subwoofer (and, of course, the remote control). The benefit of systems like this one is the ease of setup and stylish design.
Features
The S500 has Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic decoding, plays DVD Video discs, CD Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), CD-R and CD-RW discs, VCD. There is also a tuner with 20 FM and 10 AM presets. There is no MP3 or SVCD playback.
Performance
The picture quality is excellent and the sound is good for the movie watching (with 40 watt per surround channel and 80 watt for subwoofer). But for serious stereo music listening, the 2-way 40W front speakers just won?t do.
Looks
The entire system has same silver finish and coordinated design. The system comes with 2-way front left and right speakers, and full-range surround speakers for center, rear left and rear right. The satellite speakers are small and produce up to 40W each.
Rear Panel
The system?s rear panel has the following inputs/outs:
Radio: and FM input (F-Type connector) and an AM input.
Video: component video out, 2 composite and an S-Video out. There are 2 composite video inputs.
Audio: optical digital input, optical digital out, 2 analog stereo inputs, 1 analog audio out. The rear panel also has proprietary connections for the speakers (5.1).
Front Panel
The front panel of the DVD player has a headphone jack in the lower right corner. Some buttons are located on the top of the DVD player.
Features
Other than the already described, the system features two slow motion speeds (Panasonic DVD players have five) and only three fast scan speeds (five for Panasonic). The system plays SACD discs and decodes Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic.
Since Sony and Phillips try to make people choose SACD over DVD-A, there is no DVD-A playback. There is a bit-rate meter and parental control, program play, repeat play, shuffle, resume, etc. There is VCD playback (but no MP3 playback). The system can play finalized CD-R and CD-RW discs.
Remote Control
The remote control that is included is designed primarily to look cool. It does, but there are too many very small round buttons on it. The menu directional buttons are also round and too small. At least it can control other devices: TVs and cable boxes.
Bottom Line
The Sony DAV-S500 is a nice-looking easy-to-setup ?Home theater in a box? system. However, its remote is designed for looks rather than functionality and the front speakers are only adequate for movies.
