The Sony VX2000 is the older brother to the famous VX1000 a camera that has made its mark on the documentary and news gathering industry in a big way. That high mark has now been surpassed. I used the VX1000 to pick up some quick shots for our documentary that we shot last year, the lines of resolution made the addition seamless. You could not tell the difference between the $15,000 betacam picture and the $3,000 VX1000 picture, we were blown away.
Just two weeks ago I purchased this advancement in technology, the VX2000, and I am impressed with the results. The new addition of a LCD screen on the side of the camera clearly makes it easier to handle for any novices. The screen is very clear and it gives a fairly accurate depiction of what the final result will be. Unfortunately for me it is in color and not black and white, a concern for a person trying to control hues and saturation but for the average videographer and consumer a small concern, maybe even not even a concern.
The camera's on-board auto-focus and white balance work exceptionaly well and the camera stabilization feature is one of the best I have seen, hardly any picture loss. What this means for consumers is that the camera handles your focus and makes sure that your whites dont turn out to be an angelic hue around everyone, maybe some people like the angel look, but I for one prefer the true picture. The camera stabilization feature allows even the most inept camera man keep a steady picture and not make his audience feel like they have spent a day at six flags.
Now for those of you that have taken a step further than the average straight recording of family history to the actual editing and augmenting of your memories the VX2000 comes with the standard firewire input and output jack. This will allow you to import your videos into your computer with virtually no loss of picture quality. It is really easy too.
This camera is great for those people that take their filming seriously and even for those wanting to turn their hobby into a lucrative side profession. This is a fantastic durable camera that will blow your socks off. I have been working with all sorts of cameras, from the $25,000 digital betacams to the new Professional DV cams and for its price I have not seen a camera that has exceeded its expectations by so much. If you want a great camera you will not be disappointed.
