The Bottom Line:
A great CD player for loud rock music in noisy environments. A lousy CD player for classical music in quiet rooms.
I bought the Sony D-EJ725 CD player in January 2002 as a replacement for my worn out Panasonic player. I owned two Panasonic players in a row, and was quite pleased with them. However, I liked the features (and light weight) of the Sony over the current Panasonic models, so I took the D-EJ725 home from the store.
Unfortunately, I have to say I've been very disappointed with the D-EJ725. I listen to all types of music, and the Sony doesn't work well on certain forms of music. If you all want to listen to is rock or hip-hop (loudly), then this is a great CD player. However, if you listen to classical, or music with a number of soft passages, the playback is less than wonderful. The problem is that the player's electronics don't seem to effectively filter out noise from the motor or amplifier. There is a definite high-pitched whine (reminiscent of an AM radio station being picked up at a distance), particularly at the first bass-boost setting. There are also soft clicks and hums that come through the earphones. Again, if you listen to rock, you like it loud, and you're playing the CD on an airplane, I doubt you'll hear these problems. But, if you listen to music with quiet passages in quiet rooms, you'll notice the noises.
I think I'll just leave the Sony attached to the radio in my car, and go buy a Panasonic CD player for quiet listening...
