Great Monitor! Gorgeous Graphics

Pros Sleek Design, 2-VGA inputs, Vibrant fluid color and lots of adjustable controls
Cons Susceptible to signal "noise." Tedious adjustment controls. Text isn't uniformly sharp throughout screen
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Optionally Sharp text at resolutions up to 1600x1200, great color and vibrancy, and innovative design make this Sony model a top performer!
I have only had this monitor a few days, and actually the first one I received had a slight deformity on the left hand side on top and bottom corners that caused the screen to contort a little, mostly noticeable with the text only. The replacement from Dell (free of charge, I might add) was for all respects perfect. No deformity at all that wasn't mostly adjustable. I like my monitor to use 100% real estate. I can't stand not to fill the entire screen with the picture. I was able to get down to the very line of the monitor casing, fully covering all that wasted black space. Then I played with the resolutions just for fun. 2058x1536. Unbelievable! I could read the text and it was actually pretty clear. Now, we need to be realistic. Text on this thing isn't completely clear on that resolution. At 1600x1200 the picture is very nice on Professional Picture Effect.

Oops, break for a quick explanation there. The G520 has a unique picture effect option that has pros and cons with each. The three levels adjust luminescence and sharpness. Professional has the most sharpness but the least luminescence, hence you get a screen that is far from dim, but dimmer than it could be, but very crisp and detailed text. Standard is next with Dynamic the brightest, most vibrant setting, but text is really kind of blurry at that resolution. I found that at 1280x1024 and a standard setting, text is reasonably clear, and Unreal Tournament is stunningly beautiful. Really, it is nice to have that option to please everyone, but I wonder why the sacrifice in sharpness for luminescence or vice versa.

Text is also not as consistent from the middle to the corner. You have to be picky to notice, but you can BARELY see this difference on Professional mode. On Standard, it is a little easier to notice, but you'd forget quickly. On Dynamic, you can easily see the blurring. But none of them are downright unreadable.

I'm not sure how bad every monitor is with this, but the G520 seems very susceptible to signal noise. My apartment has the worst electrical layout ever and sometimes, the electrical power is really "noisy." It causes the screen to jitter really bad at 1280x1024. This is even through a APC Continuous power supply. However, I could probably eliminate most of that by adjusting the refresh rate.

Finally, the design is really nice. I especially like the ability to have two computers plugged in to it and switch inputs 1 and 2 for them. I work on computers at home and this is a great feature! I would wish for a better control layout than the tiny joystick, but hey, that's entering whiny land.

What else can I say? Wow, are games incredible on this thing! So gorgeous! So, that's why they say "Itsa Sony!"
