The Bottom Line:
400 disks sure, but at a terrible price in ease of access and quality of images
The CX985 is a great way to have quick access to 400 disks but with some serious drawbacks, most notably in ease of use and quality of playback.
The standalone Sony does not interface with a PC or network for easy update of the disk info and has an incredibly painful method of manually maintaining the list of disks.
Access to the 400 disk library list is slow and can not be made with the disk running, so there are many, many seconds between stopping play and the display of the disk list. The disk list does not allow enough characters to adequately label most films, so you are forced to abbreviate names. Search and sort functions are primitive at best - useless at worst.
The remote is an amazingly incompetent design, nothing is well placed and most of the tiny buttons do several things depending on a mode slide switch.
Image playback is noticeably less stable than other players I have owned with frequent blocking of the image. I can only assume marginal optics or error correction. Sony seems to acknowledge this as there are several settings to reduce block artifacts (none of which seem to do anything).
Speaking of settings, this thing is filled with cryptic user adjustments to image and sound, most of which seem only to change the brightness and contrast to annoying levels.
All this said, it is incredible to sit back and be able to pick from 400 disks at once.
If only Sony had put a tiny bit more thought into the user interface of this unit, it could have been great.
