The Bottom Line:
Fantastic! Go out and get this thing if you are like me and love great quality electronics but don't have a lot to spend.
I bought this to replace an older Sony player that I had. Only reason for replacing that one was to get one that could handle my CD-R discs. Well, I couldn't be happier with this gem of a DVD player. First of all, I got it as an open box at Circuit City for only $99. Other available brands were a little bit cheaper but my older Sony has made me a dedicated buyer of their stuff, so I wanted another one. And I wasn't disappointed. This thing can play "everything but a soup can lid", as they say. The picture on my 4:3 standard TV was very sharp, with brilliant natural colors. DVD-R worked beautifully, as did DVD-(plus)R, DVD(plus)RW, CD-R, and CD-RW (I didn't try DVD-RW). Also, the features are really nice. I especially appreciate that they included both choices for digital outs: coax and optical. Oh, and the disc loading time was very short. AND, like my older Sony, the layer change on longer DVDs is very short and much less noticeable than on other brands I've tried (Pioneer, Phillips). Remains to be seen how well it handles the scratched discs, but my older one also did that well. Do yourself a favor and don't waste money on the cheapest stuff around. This one does it all, and you can get it for less than 100 bucks.
