High quality, rugged, basic dual-mode mobile phone

Pros Great user interface, long battery life, rugged
Cons A bit bulky, not web enabled
Recommended it? Yes
The Sony CM-M1300 is a high quality, rugged, easy to use, dual-mode (analog and CDMA digital) mobile phone. I've had mine for about two years, and it still looks and works like new. It's a basic phone without internet support.

I don't know if it's true, but I've been told that Sony is no longer in the mobile phone business, and this may explain why I've found it almost impossible to find accessories for this phone except in the used market.

Nevertheless, I recommend the phone highly for its call quality, ease of use and long battery life.

Advantages

The best thing about this phone is the ease of menu navigation. Sony calls it the "Jog Dial Navigator." It's really just a knob on the side of the phone that you operate with your thumb to scroll through menu selections or your phone directory. To make your selection, you just press inward on the knob, sort of like clicking a mouse. It's much faster than the menu navigation systems on other phones.

Call quality is excellent in both analog and digital mode, except at very low signal strength.

Battery life is also very good. I get about 4 to 5 hours of talk time and almost three days of standby time. Because of the way I use my phone, I end up charging it no more than once a week.

The LCD display is large and very easy to read. The top line shows system status, signal strength, battery life, etc., and there are four more lines of 12 characters each.

The phone book stores up to 99 numbers of 32 digits with name tags up to 12 characters. There's also a list of the 10 most recently called numbers.

The phone has the usual array of additional features including timers, security codes, emergency number storage, welcome message, and English, Spanish or French menus. It also supports the short message service (SMS).

Finally, the phone seems to be pretty rugged. I've dropped it many times without causing any problems.

Disadvantages

This phone does not support the internet.

Furthermore, it's not particularly small (5.7" x 2.0" x 1.5" with antenna retracted) or light (7.2 ounces including battery).

A full battery charge takes hours.

Recommendation

I don't think this phone is available new anymore, but it is widely available on the used market.

If you want a basic, high quality, dual-mode phone with long battery life and an excellent user interface, this may be the phone for you. You can probably get one for under $25 from an internet auction house.
