The Bottom Line:
This is a great little phone but it's very fragile. Don't drop it!
I signed up with Bell South Mobility last week and they were offering an Ericsson phone for $1.00. It's hard to beat a deal like that, but my old cellular phone had been a "good deal" in its day and now it's a dinosaur. So I wasn't going to just take the offer with the best price - I wanted to know more.
I got an education! And I got a great little phone - an Ericsson T18z.
Let me tell you about the features I'm really enjoying:
Voice dialing is great. I don't have to remember phone numbers - I can just say "Boyfriend" and, if I've properly stored Boyfriend's number and a voice label for it, the call is in progress. (Of course I already know Boyfriend's number, but you get the idea!)
Vibrating call alert combined with Call Identification are two handy features that allowed me to discontinue using my digital pager while still remaining available. More available, in fact, than before.
If I'm in a meeting, for example, and the school needs to reach me about one of my boys, they used to have to call my pager, key in their number, and wait for me to call them back. Amazing rounds of pager/voice mail tag have been played in the past! I used a pager because I couldn't take my cell phone into a business meeting, but checking a vibrating pager is not a problem. With my T18z, if I'm in a meeting I can see who's calling and no one else has been disturbed. And if I'm not in a meeting, I can just answer the call!
Personal Ring Sounds have been helpful since there were two of them in my home at the same time and it was confusing when one of us got a call but we didn't know which. I've changed mine so that they have different ring sounds - confusion gone!
Long battery life has been a blessing, especially since I lost the charger in the move! (Bell South gave me a replacement.) The T18z battery promises 5 hours of talk time, 80 hours of stand-by time. And the battery can be charged any time, regardless of current charge level, unlike the NiCad battery my old cell phone had.
Text messaging may prove to be a handy feature, although I haven't used it yet. Other nice features, which can depend on your mobile phone service company, include data/fax, call waiting, call hold, voice mail, call forwarding, and conference calling. Voice mail has proven very handy for me already.
Negatives
My Mom is struggling with her T18z a bit because the buttons are quite small and she has a hard time seeing the print on them. Since I've stored most of the numbers she calls frequently, and helped her store voice labels, this should be less of a problem.
Recommendation
The Ericsson T18z is a great little mobile phone. It is easy to "program" and use, with long battery life and handy features that simplify life. And if you can find a deal on one like I did, even better. But even at the recommended retail price (around $89.00, I believe) it's a good value.
Update 3/2/01
This sweet little phone is fragile. I dropped it (by mistake, of course!) last week, on black-top. It seemed to survive the fall just fine, for 4 days, and then suddenly quit working. I could receive calls but the flip and the buttons would not respond. I only got 2 months use out of this phone - the BellSouth Mobility rep assures me it's undeniably and reliably dead.
So keep this in mind. I'm not a careless person, but things happen and phones can be dropped. This one just might not survive.
