Better Than Plasma - Fits Perfect In A Corner.

Pros Ultimate in HD resolution, sound, build quality, versatility, and enjoyment.
Cons NONE. The 238lb weight not an issue. TV slides well on carpet with matching stand.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Buy this one and you will want to buy a second one as well. I will. Get them now because high production costs, low profits will end tube televisions soon.
I have been researching televisions for over two years and have not been impressed until the latest release of the Sony line-up tube televisions in the XS and XBR series. I was never happy with the LCD/DLP/Plasma/HD-ILA all having fixed resolutions that could only display a maximum native resolution of 720p. And a rear projection was not reliable or durable enough for me. With small kids, I want the glass tube for protection from the occasional finger touching or flying toy. The Sony conventional (if you can even call it that since it's been redesigned with a higher display density) tube is the best out there and you don't have to put up with fading of the screen from different viewing angles.

My television room is about 14'x16' and this set fits perfect into a corner with the matching stand and is more than big enough. I did not realize how much I would like all the HD-content being broadcast in wide screen, so I may even purchase the KD-34XBR960 or KD-34XS955 later this year for my bedroom, but they are barely larger in wide screen format than this 36" 4:3 set. This 36" 4:3 set displays an equivalent 33" diagonal wide screen view (just an inch smaller than the XBR and XS wide screen) and has the same quality tube as the XBR models!

The built in HD tuner is a MUST. I have basic analog cable from COMCAST for $11.37 per month but the television scanned in about 20 additions digital channels of which 8 or 9 are actually HD! So, I guess the cable company can not truly filter out digital and HD for us bottom level subscribers. I also purchased the TERK HDTVa Antenna Pro Amplified Indoor Television Antenna to receive off the air HD content (before I realized that my analog cable would supply some HD content) and I get all the main network stations in HD wide screen format for all my nightly shows! With the press of a button I can flip between the cable and antenna inputs. Nice! Sound is fantastic! There are many, many other options I won't even go into detail on since this review is getting so long.

The highest quality picture you can buy is the Sony XS and XBR series HD televisions, so regardless of screen size, this is as good as it gets. Sometimes I think I miss the extra 0.5" of vertical height and 0.8" of width that the KD-34XBR960 and KD-34XS955 would have provided, but if you compare them side by side in the store, it's hardly noticeable. So for the best of both worlds - the KD-36XS955 is it!

I am a licensed Professional Civil Engineer by trade and I NEVER write reviews for anything because I am never quite happy enough with the quality of things in general these days. But for this, I'm writing a positive review because it absolutely deserves it.

I purchased the television from H.H.Gregg in southern Indianapolis, IN. I received the television, matching stand, 5 year warranty, and delivery for discounted costs. Because of their computer system, they can only show discounting on the television line item. My negotiated prices are:

Television: $1699.99 (retail - so no break there)
Matching Stand: FREE ($249.99 retail price) Matching offer on sonystyle.com
Warranty: $200 ($250 retail price)
Delivery: FREE ($45 price) Matching free shipping offer on sonystyle.com
Delivery Error Correction: -$100 for not getting it to me in the guaranteed next day delivery since they forgot to load it on the truck the night before.

Sales tax 6%: $90.30 (no tax on warranty/delivery)

Total out the door cost for everything: $1890.29

Hence, the television price by the line item deductions was officially $1255 ($1699.99-249.99-50-45-100) while the prices on the receipt remained at $249.99 for the stand, $250 for the warranty, $45 for delivery, and $90.30 tax.

As for my other consideration, the KD-34XBR960 - there are no discounts so my full price would have been $2199.99 (t.v.) + $249.99 (stand)+ 147.00 (tax) + $250 (warranty) + $45 (delivery) = $2891.98 out the door.

Even for the KD-34XS955(34" wide screen non-XBR model but same options as my 36"XS model) my price would have been $1999.99 (t.v.) -$100 (negotiated discount) + $249.99 (stand) + 129 (tax) + $250 (warranty) + $45 (delivery) = $2573.98

So for a range of savings of $683.69-$1001.69 from the only two other comparable models I got the best of both worlds in the KD-36XS955. Purchased on 3/24/2005.
