The Bottom Line:
Get the extended warranty!
I had the 40" XBR. Twice! The first one had an audio problem and was replaced without any hassle. The second one had the now legendary discoloration problem. It took months to get any satisfaction from Sony. First an "authorized" tech came out and put little magnets inside on the tube and the problem was 90% gone. Two days later it was back! He came back and played with the magnets again. Couldn't get it clean as before. He came back with a Sony rep and they both played the magnet game for an hour or more. Finally the rep says "well, that's as good as we're going to get it, It's in spec". I said "who's spec"? He says "Sony's". I reply that when a person puts out BIG money for a premium product he doesn't want to hear "It's in spec"! He says "well, then call Sony customer service". I began calling immediately and after several calls they agreed to replace the set with a different technology - An LCD rear projection! The KDF50WE655! I got it swapped out on October 15, 2004. I've been very pleased until recently. I've started to notice "pink blotches" on the screen that are only noticable on light (white or sky) backgrounds. I didn't get, or for that matter, wasn't offered an extended warranty so I guess I'll just have to live with it!
