Sony KDF-50WE655 - Great Value

The Bottom Line:
Equal or better picture than a plasma or LCD set for a third of the cost. Great overall value!
After three months of shopping, I purchased a 50" Sony KDF 50WE655 Rear Projection LCD. I compared Plasma sets that were smaller in size at 42" and more expensive at $5500. I walked out the door paying $2370 with a 5 year extended warranty for the Sony KDF-50WE655 and in my opinion have the same if not better picture than that of an LCD or Plasma for a third of the price.
The features of this set that will turn your head are as follows:
The picture - This set is HDTV ready so you get more lines of resolution and one crisp picture. Because this is a rear projection LCD, viewing the set straight on gives a PERFECT picture. As you move to view it at an angle the picture dims a tad. Plasma gives you viewing from any angle, but at a far more expensive price. In my opinion, this set competes with any LCD or Plasma on the market.
Sound - When making my selection, I had the dealer turn the Bass and Treble up on this set and play it off its internal sound only. Absolutely amazing. This set comes with a three speaker system that includes a subwoofer and kicks out 30 watts of power. If you cannot afford surround sound, not to worry, this set delivers quite punch.
Size - Like most people, I like to move my furniture around quite a bit over time. When looking at Plasma sets of this size, a major drawback was the weight, over 150+ pounds! With my Sony, it weighs only 80 pounds with the thickness of a plasma set. One person can easily move the TV and stand without strain.
HDTV - This set comes with an HDTV tuner built in along with ATSC Integrated Tuner that gives you the reception of local, off-air digital broadcasts providing the viewing of high-definition channels free! No need for a rooftop antenna!
Memory Stick Access - Sony Memory Stick owners can view digital photos and movies by inserting their stick in a slot on the front of this set. A great for family functions and get-togethers without having to extend wires to connect your video or digital camera.
I have only noticed two drawbacks to this set.
One, is the cabinet design. Don't get me wrong the picture is incredible but Sony gave the cabinet a really BLAND look. They could have given it a little more flare like their 55" or 60" sets.
The second is a CON followed by a helpful suggestion.
When your bulb does go out on this set, which it will depending on your use, it can cost up to $200 to replace. If your family views a lot of TV, this can get pricey since most people will have an installer do it for them and pay the installation charge of $40 per hour on top of the $200. My suggestion, when you but this set, buy an extended warranty if offered. I purchased a 5-year program through GE for $119 and bulb replacement and installation is covered. (The dealer ended up throwing the warranty in free of charge!)Make sure that you read the offered extended warranty carefully to make sure the bulb replacement and installation are covered!
All and all, this set is a great deal and is one of the highest rated for a 50' LCD Rear Projection. You can check out the ratings at www.cnet.com. They provide professional and consumer reviews of all electronics.
I have seen current prices as high as $2999 and as low as $2370. Make sure that you negotiate heavily as there is around $800 of margin in this set when it is priced at $2999.
