I've always been pretty picky when it comes to audio equipment. You'll usually find me with the large 5.1 systems boasting power output levels that have had the police telling me to turn it down on more than one occasion. These systems are great, but sometimes a little over-kill for your average TV viewing experiences. Large systems also tend to be a lot of work to set up and take down, and require some proficiency in electronics know how.
The Sony HT-CT100 system is a very clean, elegant solution for people looking for high quality sound in a simple form factor. Set up can be completed and running within 5-10 minutes possibly more if you have multiple devices to attach.
One of the great advantages with the HT-CT100 is it accepts up to 3 HDMI inputs and outputs to a single HDMI (to your TV). This alleviates the need to have an expensive receiver and further simplifying the theater setup. There are a few other audio inputs (optical/composite), but some people have experienced volume issues if you're not using HDMI.
Sound is fantastic for both music and movies/tv. A lot of HTIBs (Home Theater in a Box) systems lack in music clarity reproduction but the HT-CT100 sounds great with brilliant highs and deep lows that aren't too muddied. Bass response can sound a little boxy at higher volumes, but only real audiophiles will take note. Those looking for a realistic surround sound experience should look else where. While there are some times hints of spatial sound, most of the time it's just a wide field of left-front-right. For those looking for better faux surround sound from a sound bar, Yamaha's DSP line has shown a lot of promise and I personally thought it worked well.
The sound bar is very thin and low profile compared to a lot of sound bar systems. Placed above or below the TV, the HT-CT100 should be aesthetically pleasing to most. The subwoofer however is much taller than one would expect, it has a 90's style, but doesn't look all that bad next to a tv.
The contol system is probably the HT-CT100 biggest fault. Menus aren't very intuitive to navigate and even with experience I still find myself accidentally pressing the wrong buttons to increase or decrease center/sub volume levels.
All-in-all this is one of the best sound bar home theater systems out right now and retails at a very reasonable price.
