The Bottom Line:
We only used it a handful of times before it started to go bad. I would definitely not recommend it.
I can't say how disappointed we have been with this camera. It worked fine for the first year and a half, and then just after the warranty ended, it started doing strange things like giving us odd C13:20 error messages, saying the door was open when it wasn't, and not recognizing data recorded on most of our discs, specifically the RW's, when we had just recorded and finalized the discs.
The handycam became virtually unusable, and we lost precious video memories of our kids' preschool and kindergarten years. We kept trying, thinking it would bounce back, but obviously it did not. To make matters worse, I went around and around with the customer service people, who refused to accept that this particular device might be a lemon. After sending it to SONY twice for repair at my cost and still getting the same error messages, I demanded that SONY replace it at no cost, but they were unbelievably stubborn and would not. I was surprised and unsettled by the way they handled the situation, trying to offer me a credit toward my next SONY purchase! Are you kidding me? After the experience I had with the dud of a camera we bought...Never again!
After doing a bit more research after the fact, I found out from several employees at a local electronics store that Sony Handycams are generally no good and do not function as advertised, ie the RW recorders don't work with RW discs, etc. The employees recommended staying away from SONY handcams, but I already knew to keep my distance. They just confirmed what I had learned painfully over the previous two years. Bottom line, don't buy SONY, not only will it not work right, but SONY won't fix it when it doesn't!
