Sony HandyCam DCR-HC96

byjerryspoor Apr 27, 2006

Pros Great technology
Cons Some accessories can add to the price.
Recommended it? Yes

The DCR-HC96 is a well designed camera in my opinion. The base unit takes stress off the camera connections and allows the battery to charge while in the docking station. During this time the camera can do other chores. While in the docking station the camera is controlled from the computer... Read full review »

Not perfect... but still worth every penny!

bybwrichard Oct 6, 2007
11 Helpfuls 12 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros superior video/photo quality, light and compact
Cons Memory Stick Pro/Duo, slow picture taking, high cost
Recommended it? Yes

Granted, I'm not a loyal Sony fan. I respect it as a solid brand but don't have the blind trust for it like some of my friends do. So the decision to go with DCR-HC96 was solely based its features. At a time a capable digital camcorder routinely only fetches $400, dishing out $600 for this one... Read full review »

Sony HandyCam DCR-HC96

Pros Small and light weight.
Cons None
Recommended it? Yes

I researched every camcorder up and down. 3-Chip,DVD,Hard drive and HDV. For the money and the current Technology, you will be hard pressed to find a better camera. 3chip is awesome unless your inside a party or other low light situations. DVD is not yet there, almost and by the time it is I will... Read full review »

A good choice if you're not ready for HD

byrmac Dec 15, 2007
9 Helpfuls 10 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Excellent image quality, easy to use
Cons A few strange design deficiencies
Recommended it? Yes

Although I give this camera four stars, I'm not going to be as enthusiastic about it as some of the other reviewers. I rated it this high based in part on what else is available in this price range. There are two camcorders at this price/feature level worthy of serious consideration, the Sony and... Read full review »

Manual is misleading

Pros Video is great.
Cons Will not accept a NP-FP90 battery as stated in the manual.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this camera to replace my DCR-HC32. Loved my HC32, but wanted better video. Video is great on this camera , even in low light. My problem with this camera, is Sony must have changed something, because manual say it will work with NP-fp70 or NP-FP90. Well my NP-FP90's don't work at all in... Read full review »

The DCR-HC96 Delivers High Quality Video

bytirepressure Feb 28, 2006
5 Helpfuls 6 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Colors and sharpness of image, depth to field, flash, auto lens cover, top loading...
Cons Confusing controls, plasticky feeling construction.
Recommended it? Yes

I tried the DCR-HC96 for a week-long beach vacation under a variety of conditions using mostly the "Easy Handycam" (auto) function. I tinkered with some of the many manual functions, gadgets and effects but found that the "Easy Handycam" worked fine for most of my uses. The video quality for... Read full review »

Great product, lousy service

byskier270 Mar 21, 2007
4 Helpfuls 5 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Great features, picture quality, and ease of use. Good value.
Cons Tape eject mechanism is super sensitive. Mine broke after one month.
Recommended it? Yes

Ease of use. Great features. Good picture quality. Good value. LCD menu is a little tough to see in bright light conditions. Requires I-link cable to burn dvds, a major oversight. Sony has only two service centers in the USA. Forget walking to your local store if you need to get it fixed under... Read full review »
