Save Time In A (Digital) Bottle

Pros as slick as you want be
Cons trigger is a bit small and tight
Recommended it? Yes
When my wife gave the best material birthday present of my life, it was a profound experience. Memory is our personal history. So there is no way that I'm going to be left out of the digital memoirs revolution. I am interested in the meticulous documentation of my everyday life.

I tracked and traced the route of this package (contents: this camera) all day on a seriously snowy day in Chicago. Through snow related acts of confusion, courage, and perseverance, the camera and I finally were introduced later in the night.

Play faster into the future.

I know, this is the kind of adventure that's fun for the entire family. That's why my parents in Louisville sent us a road hazard care package, complete with flashing lights and orange triangles. This video camera was the only equipment I needed. Blinding snow, flipped vehicles, steamy industrial machines, blue sky the way it was when you were little- all now sealed up in digital format.

The real beauty of this device is its versatility. This camera can see in the dark. In its zero-lux-infrared mode it transforms invisible heat radiation into pixels of light. It casts an infrared light stream from the front of the camera, much the same way the remote for your TV does. Like a little spy flashlight, it illuminates things only in the camera's mind as well as seeing ambient infrared. Oh boy. This camera is such a thing.

Did I say video camera, well...My camera can make still pictures as well, and...Stores the information on a cute wafer-thin removable chip called a memory stick. You don't have to worry about searching through the videotape to find the stills. These little memory sticks can hold up to 64 Megabytes (MB). Let me give you some perspective: A standard Zip disc can hold 100MB. These tiny pieces of memory aren't cheap. My 32MB chip cost me seventy bucks. It can hold 329 digital images at the highest resolution- equivalent to nine rolls of 36 exposures. A lot of pictures.

The battery that it comes with at full charge will last you just over an hour, but never fear. You can get one that lasts 12 hours. I opted for the 8hr battery because it was smaller and cheaper ($80). You'll also need a device to get the memory stick data into your computer. I got the memory stick floppy disc adapter for $70. There is also a USB-memory stick hook up device for about the same price. I found the camera online for $650, after the goodies and shipping the total was around nine-hundred. All these fine accessories and more brought to you by SONY. The list of beautiful gadgets goes on and on. Sony.com is dangerously attractive site.

My only complaint about the camera is also positive. Its compactness. Since it straps to the hand as a video camera does, it does not allow for a ton of flexible movement. The camera is as limber as your right hand is. And the red button and its adjacent switch bind my thumb when I want to shoot quickly.

Oh, I would be loath to end this review of such a treasured object on a low note. If you love and respect SONY products, as I have since I was a small child, this will be another device that warms your heart, makes you feel sleek and powerful, and excites those feelings you almost didn't remember.
