The Bottom Line:
Image quality
I was skeptical at first when I came across the Sony HDR-UX5, I had never been a big fan of disk drive camcorders. When I first opened the box I found the camcorder and instructions to be self explanatory, everything was ready to go right out of the box.
I found the functionality of this camcorder to be very user friendly, the touch screen menu saves space and dose away with most of the traditional buttons which are common on most second generation camcorders. It may take the user a while to get used to the touch menu. The (10x) optical zoom keeps the video image clear from artifacts and distortion and the (80x) digital zoom stands up to most other camcorders.
The two reasons why I bought this camcorder and kept it were image quality and sound quality. This camcorder takes advantage of full HD, the color standards and sharpness are simply over the top. The 5.1 Surround Sound takes video blogging and home videos to a totally new level. The sound clarity can take any studio mic on a run for its money.
Although if the user wanted to add a shotgun mic or external light source it can also be done with ease with this camcorder which includes a full use standard hot shoe and lenses filter screw.
The new user may be wary of this camcorder due to the fact that it shoots in AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) which many video editing programs do not recognize. The software included in this package will allow the user to convert files into MPEG2 format, recognized by most all video editing software programs.
Another feature this camcorder was able to integrate is a stand alone digital camera. Take countless photos (3.98 Megapixels) with the use of a memory slot in the side panel of this camcorder.
Get your final product shown on the big screen or the home screen with built in USB, A/V OUT and full HDMI OUT, you will be showing your family videos or what happened last weekend in the highest definition as well as with ease.
