The Bottom Line:
Nice radio for the AM listener who has felt neglected by the radio manufacturers
My mother in law loves AM radio late at night when she can't sleep. When her 25 year old radio finally died, she asked me which radio to replace it with. I had no clue, so I started looking for reviews. I bought this with a few recommendations from the internet, and was quite surprised. So much so that I put it next to my GE Super Radio that night and did a head to head comparison on performance. The Super Radio did get more distant stations, but the very distant stations were so weak and noisy that they would not qualify as listenable. But for every listenable station the Super Radio would pull in, this little Sony pulled in also. The distant stations on the Sony did have some background hiss that the super radio did not however. There was no problem picking up a station in Rochester NY, which is about 330 miles away as the crow flies.
FM performance was typically average - OK, bet certainly not stellar. The TV bands got the local stations, but some trouble with the ones 40 miles away. The Weather worked fine, but you would have to turn up the volume to hear it.
If you like AM radio, this one is a winner!
