Excellent Picture Quality - When It Works!!!

Pros Superb picture quality
Cons Too many problems, lack of attention to wide-spread problems by Sony
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Buy it only if an authorized Sony technician lives next door.
The KF-42WE610 is one of those products that I want to love, but poor quality control and lack of repair follow-through on Sony's part has sent me looking elsewhere. When it works, the picture quality and features are better than any product out there in it's price range. However, my family expects basic things out of a television, such as powering on when the Power button is pressed, to work without tinkering.

I'm now on my second unit. The first unit was purchased in November 2003, and immediately began showing strange anomalies in picture quality at times. A slight band would appear at the bottom of the screen and slowly move up to about mid-screen before disappearing. There would be a discontinuity or "shift" in left-right picture alignment as the band moved up. The problems seemed to be most visible during fast moving scenes, such as football games. The problem caused text that scrolls left-right across the bottom of a picture (think ticker info on CNN) to "jump" and "jitter" continuously. This would occur for a few days, then clear up. I finally got the store to replace the unit, because every time the repair crew came out, it wasn't acting up.

The second KF-42WE610 has not exhibited that problem, but almost immediately began the now well-known buzzing and lamp failure in a random fashion. It has progressively gotten worse to the point now where I leave the front cover removed so that I can pop out the lamp assembly, shake it, and put it back in so that I can watch TV. This is ridiculous!

The Sony repair folks say that a repair is now available, but I'll have to wait up to two weeks for parts and have the TV taken in to the shop for another week. I have pressed the store that I purchased from for my money back, because I have lost all faith in this Sony TV even making to the one-year warranty mark, much less lasting beyond that. Buyer beware!
