Sony KF50WE610

Pros Pic Quality Ease of Use Price Longevity
Cons Consumes a lot of your time. :) Initial availability at time of market release
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Get it if you can find it. Why? Simply because this set is killer.
Had to wait approximately six weeks to get this box, which was pure torture :) We ordered it on Nov 6, and finally took receipt of it sometime in late December (Right before X-MAS). We ordered from ABC Warehouse, and paid an astonishing $2650.00 which, in ways, justified the wait along with the excellence that this set offers.

The Sony supplied stand costs WAY too much...and it sits just a tad bit too low in our opinion, so we opted for a BUSH model VS74377-03 that was roughly half the price of the Sony stand, and looks better. Colors match etc. Check out the model link below if you are interested. Best Buy had these in stock a few weeks before XMAS. I would imagine it shouldn't be too difficult to find the stand.

Anyways back to the TV. We haven't had ANY problems to speak of with this set. Quite frankly I am VERY pleased with our decision. Like many others here and in various forums, there was some debate regarding this set vs. the Samsung DLP models. Come to find out that a lot of the sales people were pitching the Samsung simply because they could GET IT much faster than this set. I am sure many people out there are FRUSTRATED as all heck b/c of availability. I will say it again: Worth the wait. What you saw the first time you looked at this set will not disappoint you when the set is in your entertainment room.
You may need to get an extra couch. :)

The colors are vivid, remote is pretty good, there are like 7 video inputs total, two of them, being component in, and of course, the DVI in. Thin and stylish for an LCD, not too heavy, quiet (no fan noise problems as some have noted). We haven't used the memory stick feature yet, so I cannot give any feedback on it. We haven't seen any degradation in terms of picture quality in scenes containing a lot of action as some have noted. Warm up time is nearly immediate.

Progressive DVD looks outstanding. Simply put.
We have Comcast provided HDTV signal, and true 1080i is phenomenal.

We have a surround system so I cannot comment on the sound too too much other than it sounds like you would expect a television to sound like without any bells and whistles.

There is a feature called Twin View that is rather neat. You can watch two different video sources side by side in varying aspect ratios. 4:3 vs. 16:9, etc. A nifty toy for those who dig that type of thing.

Don't know if this matters to anyone, but there is no grounding prong on the power plug. Standard two prong.

The box comes with a small disclaimer regarding "stuck pixels" stating that it is a property of LCD technology and does not mean malfunction. We have ONE in the upper right hand corner. One of our friends pointed it, but we still cannot see it whatsoever unless you are right ONTOP of the thing. Even then, there are what 3.28 Million pixels on the whole thing.

Overall a fantastic set coming highly recommended from a computer geek who loves technology, A/V, sound, etc.

Thanks for reading. Hopefully it helps some people out there.

*** 1 year update 11-28-04 ***

Well, we have now had this set for just over a year! Still very satisifed here. Absolutely no problems to speak of. No bulb burn out problems, no picture degredation, no delayed warmup times.

I looked around at current prices for this set, and they are roughly the same as they were when we bought ours a year ago. I think that is a good indication of the success of this product and the solid market share that it held/continues to hold...considering this time last year many stores refused to carry the product due to it's demand.

Comcast added a few more HD channels to their lineup, but still not as much HD content as I'd like to see. I am considering VOOM! HD service. They boast a lot more HD programming. I will write a review on VOOM! if and when we obtain it.

I still get "OOOO's" and "AHHH'S" when we have guests, even when the set is turned off.

One thing that I would recommend now. Get a video tweaker. More specifically get a THX calibration DVD or something similar. After performing a solid color calibration, sharpness calibration, etc based on the THX DVD, I noticed a very friendly "nudge" in terms of overall picture quality. Not that the quality was bad or substandard before calibration, but you get to "know" your set after a while, and can appreciate the aspects of finee tuning.

Cheers for now!
