Is this Rear Projection?

byhusak Jun 23, 2000
Pros Very clear bright picture
Cons Didn't fit where I wanted it! PIP no good for cable
Recommended it? Yes
My wife and I were on a mission to find a bigger TV for the built-in entertainment center we have in our family room. After carefully measuring the space we started investigating our options to fill the space with the biggest TV we could find. Our search led us to the 32" Sony Vega flatscreens and assorted other brands. Then we decided to look at smaller rear-projection TVs.

We were surprised to find out this even was a rear-projection TV. It is crystal clear, viewable from many angles, and even in bright light doesn't wash out like others do (it does but not as much). We also were pleasantly surprised to find out it cost the same as the Sony Vega flat-screens for 11" more on the diagonal space! The only drawback was the space factor - according to the measurements it should have fit! It did but it sticks out 6" from the cabinet. The set was so good we decided we could live with it!

The TV is very easy to use and setup. Setting the convergence is a one-button thing. The menus are very intuitive and without reading the manual you can basically get this running in about 10 minutes. The supplied remote is good with a high-quality feel and glow in the dark buttons. The remote can also be programmed to work with your other components.

The TV features two-tuner PIP but unfortunately for me my cable uses a box so I don't take advantage of this as much as I like as I don't use the internal tuner. The inputs on the TV are plentiful with 3 video inputs, 2 antennae. This TV even includes component video inputs for DVDs and also has inputs on the front for a camcorder or game system. The other normal features are there. The sound is pretty good however I run it through my home theater so I can't compare it fairly.

The only thing I don't like (and it's minor) is that the TV takes 5 seconds to come on. And when there is no video input looks like it is off even if it isn't - which isn't necessarily bad!

Using DVDs on this TV is a pleasure in itself. It lends itself well to movies with a very deep color representation. Blacks are so black while colors are very vivid and bright. You can play with the settings and set up "custom" brightness/contrast picture modes along with the preset ones.

All-in-all it is a very solid unit, well crafted, a bargain for the price and just the right size for a small room where a 50" is way to big. It has all the features that videophiles will like in terms of inputs, crispness of picture, etc. and it is very easy to use. It's hard to believe rear-projection TV technology has come so far. I have a Mitsubishi rear-projection TV and it isn't nearly as sharp.
