Great when it still works, get an extended warranty

Pros Great while it works. Wide horizontal viewing angle. Wide screen TVs are excellent decor-wise.
Cons Broke on day two! And from what I've read, I'm not alone. Get extended warranty!!!
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Sony widescreen is prestige in the TV world, but this one will break. Mine broke on the second day! GET AN EXTENDED WARRANTY OR DONT GET BUY AT ALL.
I purchased this TV after reading several reviews on the internet. What I found is that about half of these TVs have major problems within the first six months. Although I never even consider extended warranties, after reading reviews by others, I felt compelled to get one (almost $500 for 5 years from Sears, about 40% the cost of the TV at $1299).

I connected the HD digital cable receiver and tuned PBS, showing an Alaska nature show and it was absolutely wonderful. Detail watching CSI required a barf-bag. On day number two of owning this masterpiece, the red channel (this has a three-gun projector, like the old days, separate red, green and blue) "blew". The whole screen is blurry. Thank goodness I knew to get the extended warranty. According to others on the web, Sony offers no help whatsoever should this very common problem happen. Sears will come fix it so I hear, or replace. Sony should face a class action lawsuit for releasing a product that is utterly unreliable. Who do they think they are....Microsoft???

In all, this is a good TV for a narrow room like mine (recommended viewing distance is only 5 feet), but you have to really want this to work to make it worthwhile. Expect to spend several days at home waiting for repair. Figure in the cost of the extended warranty in your purchase decision.

Also, make sure you get the matching stand or a knock off. This TV needs a 12" stand, no more no less. Difficult to find, and the whole mail-order world was sold out of the Sony brand stand when I ordered the TV (Aug. 2004)
