Make sure you have a large living room!
Pros
Excellent Picture; Uh, very large screen
Cons
DVD movies get chopped top and bottom; sound is not that powerfull by itself
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
This is a feature filled Big screen TV, that provided you have the space, will probably be the biggest TV on your block.
First of all make sure you have a large living room! I would guess at least 15' x 15'..... My Living room is long (12' wide by 20' long), so I keep the TV at the end of the living room. My Dining room is attached to the living room, so basically I can clearly watch TV from the last chair in the dinning room about 30 feet away! The TV is that big.
Make sure you check the width of the TV (about 26" out of the box) so it can fit through your door.
The TV has built in wheels so it is easy to move on a wood floor, but not so easy on a carpet floor.
OK, it was a "toss up" between a 53" wide screen HDTV or a regular (box) 53" HDTV. I choose the Regular type because 80% of the time you will be receiving standard box signals. So if I choose the Widescreen model I would have to live with the annoying black bars to the sides of the screen.
This way with the regular "box" type screen I only see bars on the top and bottom when I watch DVD's only. But remember that the TV screen is so tall that it?s like I bought a 45" Widescreen TV when watching 16:1 programs; and that to me is the best of both worlds.
I picked the Sony over the Toshiba and Panasonic, because when ever I invest over $2,000 on home electronics, I like to choose a name I have trusted for practically all my life (32 years). Plus it was on sale ($2,199).
Listen, I like to consider myself an electronics fan. But, with a new house and new kid on the way I didn?t have as much time to do as much research as I would like. But even though I checked some reviews, once you arrive at the store there are literally 50 TV's to choose from.
65" HDTV Widescreen; 61" HDTV; 53" HDTV; 53" Widescreen HDTV; 48" TV; 48 HDTV wide screen; Sony WEGA; Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, RCA,.....and on and on and on...
In the end all the TV's I saw had enough features to keep the average user happy. As I walked in, it all came down to which name I trusted most..... SONY.
A 53" TV looks small when it's next to a 65" Model. I was worried that the Sony I choose would be too small, but when I got it home it actually almost seemed to big... but then I got used to it!
This TV is very sharp. DVD's are crisp and play in the 16:1 format. There is no option to stretch the top and bottom of the screen (that was my only complaint). Cable TV can be as sharp depending on the source. Overall this TV is so sharp that I have my PC attached to it! I can surf the web and see all the fine print.
Sound quality is nothing special. You should attach it to an external audio source to compliment the TV.
The remote allows you to watch 10 channels at the same time. But if your cable is scrambled, allot of the channels will show static, so I don't even use it. A feature that is really good is that it allows you to spit the screen and zoom in on either of the two sides. So I can watch TV on one half and use my PC on the other half. But sound will on play on the selected side only.
Over all I am very pleased with this TV, it performs well and it looks great.
