The Bottom Line:  Read my 'Verdict'
I was in search of the best rear-projection TVs one day, and when I thought of the best, I pictured the KP53XBR300 and KP53V80. So, while checking out the selection at an electronics store, I came across one nice TV. The Sony KP53V85. It looked very similar to the Sony KP53V80, but it was all gray. So, I decided to put the Sony KP53V85 to the test, after I purchased it for the basement home entertainment system.

Price:
You can find the Sony KP53V85 at a price tag of around $2300. The Sony KP53V85 is priced much less than the KP53XR300 which is the best rear-projection TV on the market. The 53" XBR comes in at around ~$3900, plus they are very hard to find. The Sony KP53V85 is priced at only $2300, and gives you truly affordable quality. The Sony KP53V85 is the best in its class, and the V85 series TVs are probably the best rear-projection TVs in their classes. If you want a truly high quality masterpiece from Sony, then the Sony KP53V85 is a best buy.

Warranty:
The Sony KP53V85 comes with an extended 3 year parts&labor warranty from Sony. Sony has great warranties, and they work very well with them. Sony takes care of all problems very quickly and hassle free. Sony warranties are great, and some of the best for any television.

Looks and Styling:
The Sony KP53V85 looks much like a Sony KP43S70. It's gray rather than being black like most other Sony rear-projection TVs. Sony seems to be going for the gray look in their newer line of TVs. The XBRs are gray, the WEGAs are gray, and the new V85 series is gray. The gray giant will look great in any part of the house, it's a very attractive TV.

Durability:
The Sony KP53V85 is built very solid. It comes with a screen sheild to protect it from dents and scratches. These sheilds are great to have if you havce children or pets around the house. From what I know, these sheilds come standard on ALL Sony rear-projection TVs. They don't come standard on some other makes. Overall, the Sony KP53V85 is truly built to last for a long time, it's built Sony tough!

Installation:
Installing the Sony KP53V85 was no problem for me. The Sony KP53V85 came with a very easy to follow instruction manual, but I didn't need to look at it. The Sony rear-projection TVs are just as simple to install as any 20" TV on the market. The Sony KP53V85 overall is a breeze to set up. Usually if you get it delivered, the delivery men will install it. But installing this giant shouldn't be a problem for anyone. Installing external devices such as DVDs, satellite, or recievers should be a breeze. All the high end ports are built right into the TV, closer to the side. Installation of these devices should also be a breeze for just about any user.

Sound:
The sound on the Sony KP53V85 is very strong. It of course has simulated surround sound like its preddecessor, the Sony KP53V80. You can set the sound to either central or surround. I usually use central because it really does feel more powerful than surround. Anyway, the sound on the Sony KP53V85 is excellent. It's very strong, and purely incredible. I was able to fill the whole room with great sound, the speakers are just great. Sony really knows how to make speakers, and it really puts great sound in their rear-projection TVs. The Sony KP61XBR300 comes loaded with a 120-watt speaker system which will blow you away, the Sony KP53V85 also has a system that will blow any average viewer away. The Sony KP53V85 does come loaded with Dolby Digital surround sound, but it also has ports that allow for hooking up a great reciever. You should purchase a reciever with DTS decoding, and attatch and M&K surround sound system to the TV. This will give maximum effect for sound. It's just like a movie theater.

Bass:
The Sony KP53V85 has some real bass. It can make the entire room shake. The bass on the Sony KP53V85 is great, and it works very accordingly with the sound. This is truly some great bass, and it can make a movie seem very life-like. The bass on the Sony KP53V85 and XBR rear-projection TVs is superior to the bass of other rear-projection TVs that I have seen on the market.

Video:
The resolution on the Sony KP53V85 is just incredible! The colors are very smooth and bright. There are no visible pixels at all with the Sony KP53V85. Everything looks amazing on this TV. If you're not sure about HDTV, then go for the Sony KP53V85. It's digital, and can keep up with changing technology based on HDTV. It's also a lot cheaper than HDTV and has a 4:3 screen ratio. The 53" is huge, it may look small in the store, but it's really large. Watching sports or movies is great on this TV. It feels just like you're in a movie theater with the great picture quality and sound. The video quality on the Sony KP53V85 is the best in its class, and compares to the picture quality of the Sony XBRs. There is no comparing any other TV to the Sony KP53V85 which is in the same price range.

DVD Quality:
Can it possibly get any better? DVDs look great on the Sony KP53V85. Buying a DVD to use with the Sony KP53V85 is a really good idea. I hooked up some flagship DVD players (which I borrowed and I happen to own the Toshiba) onto the Sony KP53V85. They all looked great, and the picture looked so incredibly real. The Sony KP53V85 really shows great video power.

Ease of Use:
The Sony KP53V85 is in fact very easy to use. Setting the settings and using the features on the Sony KP53V85 is a breeze. I was able to choose all the settings I wanted through the menu. The menus on the Sony KP53V85 and other Sony rear-projection TVs have very easy to use interfaces, and are very powerful. I was able to navigate through them without any problems. Any person can do it, really. The Sony KP53V85 is very very very easy to use, don't let the size fool you.

Other Cool Features:
The Sony KP53V85 has little wheels on the bottom which make it very easy to move on hard surfaces. The Sony KP53V85 also has the screen sheild come standard. Other small features are:

*Favorite Channels List
*3D Comb Filter
*Clock
Plus more!

The Verdict:
The Sony KP53V85 is probably the best rear-projection TV on the market, price wise. It only comes after the XBR series rear-projection TVs. You really do get a lot more than what you'd expect for your money. You get a very high quality TV with great sound, picture, and features on the market; with a price tag of only ~$2300. For such a price, this TV is unbelievable. This TV is very easy to use, large, and is great for the whole family. There are no other TVs on the market in its price range that can compete. Toshiba, Mitsubishi, and Panasonic fall short completely. This really is the best TV in its class, and probably on the whole market. The Sony KP53V85 works great in any environment, and your kids will love it! :o) If you want the best, here's the best.
