Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I recommend this TV to anyone with the room for it and the desire to enjoy widescreen DVDs and other digital media.
This Sony 57" projection TV is a great centerpiece to any home theater setup. Sony's Hi-Scan projection TV models have received great reviews and this incarnation is a step up from the previous Hi-Scan line. How have improvements been made? Sharper, clearer pictures are evident from your first viewing of this model. A wide range of AV input (7!!!) make this unit highly adaptable and expandable with many of your audio and video components.
The housing on this unit is all silver with a shiny thin control strip down the center of the base that houses the power, channel, volume, and media stick input. For a 57" TV this model is of a reasonable depth (Dimensions: 53 5/8 x 54 7/8 x 27 1/8" (1361x1394x689mm) (WxHxD)and Weight: 216 lbs 1 oz (98kgs)-Luckily this unit has a nice set of casters on it to avoid getting a hernia.
Features include:
An excellent built in screen protector. Very solid and very substantial. Very scratch resistant so far!
Wide screen mode-Watch conventional 4:3 aspect ratio broadcasts in wide screen mode (image stretching). Also Full, Zoom, Wide Zoom and Normal viewing. When watching normal cable or tv broadcasts you may switch between these various modes to adjust how the image looks on the screen. I
DRC Digital Reality Creation-Allows you to replace the NTSC waveform with a near HD equivalent while doubling the number of horizontal and vertical lines. The result is four times the density from quality sources such as DVD, satellite and digital camcorders. Also allows a customization of detail that is useful when viewing different sources.
Scrolling index-appears as a strip of channels running vertically down the right side of the screen and gives you a preview of selected programs.
Twin View-For watching two programs simultaneously (useful for watching sporting events. Plus you can adjust the size of each of the split screens.
Steady Sound-To equalize volume between programming and commercials.
Clear Edge Velocity Modulation-Sharpens picture definition by enhancing the vertical lines.
Component Video Inputs: DVD(480p,480i) and didgital set-top box(HD1080i,720p).
One of the first things I did when I got this TV delivered was to use the Flash Focus feature. This feature is a Digital Convergence tool that automatically adjusts the image for optimal picture quality. A useful feature that will occasionally have to be done after moving the unit.
This is a Hi-Scan HDTV-ready design which basically means you can use one of the inputs to hook up a separate HDTV tuner. This adds another dimension to your viewing by bringing out the true potential of your HDTV. Also included is a DVI digital input which allows for use of future HDTV tuners.
When you pop in any widescreen DVD you will truly be in video heaven. The quality is amazing, especially for a unit in this price range (more on that later). Couple this unit with a progressive-scan DVD player and you will thank yourself for buying this unit. Jurassic Park and Monsters Inc. are two highly recommended DVD's for showcasing this unit (especially if you have a thunderous home theater system to go with this). I originally used a standard DVD player and was also very impressed with the image quality, but progressive is the way to go. I especially like the ability to change the image quality using the Digital Reality Creation feature. Its a push button image adjustment tool that changes the look of what you are watching. Almost as if you added a filter to the image your viewing. The scan lines on a TV this large are usually an issue when viewing non HDTV signal, but with this model (depending on the source and viewing distance) there is no noticeable horizontal scan lines.
I use digital cable, but make no mistake it is not the same as watching a DVD or other similar source. Some cable channels are better than others, and this unit truly shines when viewing HDTV broadcasts and widescreen DVDs. Also while watching cable programming in normal mode (4:3) you have bars on either side of the image. I find this distracting most of the time so I use the wide zoom so that the image fills the screen. While it does change the shape of the image slightly it is not at all distracting to me. When shopping try out all the modes for viewing and you will see what I mean. Different modes can lose some of the images off the sides or top/bottom.
The last noteworthy feature is the memory stick slot on the front of the unit which allows you to take the memory stick right out of your Sony Camera and view your images right on the 57" screen (albeit in normal mode...bars on side). With this is a slide show feature and an index page. Amazing to view on the TV even compared with viewing them on a computer.
Price is always an issue when shopping for a Sony. Sony products are usually more highly priced when compared to other models with similar features (in my opinion). However, in this case for the price I paid ($2499 from Circuit City)for this model was well worth it. Comparing other models from Hitachi, RCA, Toshiba etc. the image quality of this Sony really won me over and the price was right. I have seen the price fluctuate from $2499-$3299 (also with promotions like:free dvd player, $100 store gift certificate etc.)
Overall I am highly satisfied with this TV. It is very reasonable for the size and features it offers. A 65" version is available (KP-65WV600) but you really need a pretty large room for that. The room that this unit is in is approximately 26'x17'.
I would recommend purchasing the extended warranty with accompanying in home service for a few hundred dollars. Also delivery would be a must for most people buying this, because of its weight and size.
