Nice picture, nice price, but lacks one major feature.
Pros
? Good picture, color ? 1080i, 480i, 480p capable. ? Plenty of inputs (seven!)
Cons
? NO 720p CAPABILITY! What!?
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Great 480i support. 480p and 1080i support are great. 720p support is lousy, as it is resampled to a 480p size display.
I purchased a Sony KP57WV600 just a few weeks ago. The remote control has enough buttons to keep you entertained, and they are organized enough to make finding commonly-used buttons easy, and to not make the remote seem cluttered. Overall, I chose this television because the picture quality and color stood heads and shoulders above the others in the stores I compared side-by-side. This unit also boasts their "Digital Reality Creation" circuit, which is their 3-2 pulldown technology. I'll have to say it makes interlaced signals from quality sources look very good. "Not a simple line-doubler," is a quote taken from the owner's manual.
There is one drawback, and it is a BIG one. I wish I had caught this little tidbit while doing my research, but I did not. Right in the middle of the owner's manual, they state that this HDTV does not support a native 720p signal; that the picture is resampled to a 480i signal. This is UNACCEPTABLE to me, seeing as how I play Xbox games and 720p will most assuredly become the standard for most games in 2004, as HDTV becomes more widely adopted by developers. What surprises me is the fact that the television displays 1080i in precise, gorgeous detail.
I cannot comment on the sound quality, however. I have audio played through a 5.1/6.1 receiver. This unit touts their version of "phantom" surround capability, and my previous experience with SONY audio equipment leads me to believe a user without a separate receiver would not be disappointed.
Overall, because of the lack of 720p support, I am disappointed with my purchase and wish I bought something else. It's too bad, considering everything else on this TV was so great.
