One awesome TV!

Pros Large Screen, Twin View, Index Function, HDTV
Cons Cannot stack a DVD/VCR on the top of the unit.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  An excellent choice for a big screen TV. Sure, you get better resolution with a plasma TV, but try and get a 57" plasma TV for $2,500.
Exterior

The TV is measures 53-5/8"w x 54-15/16"h x 27-1/8"d. One good thing about this TV is that the back of the TV is angled. That means that this TV is well suited for corners. However, since the back of the TV is angled, there isn't a flat surface to stack a DVD player/VCR on. Attaching a shelf to the unit itself would not be a very good idea since any distortion to the backside of the TV will result in a distorted picture. If you really want to have you A/V equipment above the TV, a wall mounted shelf would be your best bet.

The bottom of the screen is about 23" above the floor, so viewing is best at a distance of 10' or more. The bottom 23" houses the built-in speakers and basic TV controls (power, volume+/-, channel +/-, memory stick slot, flash focus, and remote sensor). The entire unit sits on 6 casters, which makes the 213lb TV a lot easier to move around.

Input/Output

There are a total of 7 input jacks, of those 7, 2 are HD/DVD/audio inputs, 4 are video/S-video/audio inputs, and 1 HDTV/audio input. There is one set of monitor outputs, and on set of audio outputs. There are also 3 coax cable inputs (aux, to convertor, and vhf/uhf). My TV is setup so that basic cable is through the vhf/uhf coax cable input, pay cable stations are on video 1, and DVD/VHS is on video 3 (video 2 terminals are on the front of the TV, Sony put it there for easy camcorder hook-up). Sony went one step further and lets you "program" the TV to skip unused video input jacks. So if you have devices hooked up to video 1 and 3 only, you can program the TV to skip 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 when using the tv/video function. Naming if the "video 1" to DVD, VHS, etc.. is also possible.

Picture Quality

Picture quality on this TV is great! Since this is a projection TV, you have to view the screen within a 20 degree vertical angle and a 60 degree horizontal angle. Anything outside of those parameters, and you lose picture quality. One big thing I noticed is that the screen is so big and clear, that the picture quality or "noise" of broadcast (analog) channels are horrible. Looking at a "regular" TV, the noise is visible, but since the screen is smaller, it goes somewhat unnoticed, not with this TV. Oceanic needs to hurry up and broadcast all their programs in HDTV. Play a DVD, and you get crisp pictures (especially if you use the component video inputs!).

Features

My favorite feature of this TV is the Twin View. This splits the screen in two. You can view two different channels/video sources in this mode, however the audio will be only for the current selection. This is great for those days when you got two sport events happening at the same time. Another similar feature is an index feature. This shows the current channel, and the right side of the screen shows small thumbnails (automatically scrolls) of the other channels. This way you get to see a short "clip" of what is "on" on other stations. This may be useful for some, but I think the Twin View is better suited for "channel surfing".

The ability to view digital still photos are handled through the memory stick slot on the front of the unit. Access s a little on the slow side, but not too bad. You have the option of viewing slides individually, or as a slideshow. It is very easy to use, and picture quality is crystal clear.

Other cool functions:
Wide screen mode - 4 different settings for viewing programs (wide zoom, normal, full mode, zoom mode).
Freeze function - Freezes the picture, useful there is important information on screen that you need to write down.

Sound

Not like you are in a movie theater, but good sound quality from TV speakers. Bass and Treble can be adjusted manually. the bass is deep and treble crisp (for 20 watts). A nice touch to this TV is the steady sound feature. This stabilizes the volume when switching channels/sources, so you shouldn't have to fool around with the volume unless you WANT to. So far, I have found that the "Tru Suround" setting sounds best.

Conclusion

It has only been a few days since I got this TV and I LOVE IT! I still can't believe that I finally have a wide screen TV. Watching DVD's is just like being at the movies (minus the sound). If you are in the market for a wide screen TV, I highly recommend this model.
