A great picture and good value

Pros Fantastic picture, very good anti-glare screen
Cons Reports of some units flickering, requiring repair/replacement
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great picture out of the box, even better with some minor tweaking using AVIA or other calibration disk. Wide viewing angle, very little glare, good color levels.
The Sony 65WV600 was the TV I decided on after looking at a price comparable Mitsubishi at the store and after actually buying and taking delivery of a Hitachi 57UWX20B. Out of the box, the picture was nicer, and after home calibration using AVIA, it's very sweet indeed. The handling of 4:3 to 16:9 stretch is much better on the Sony than on the Hitachi, but the Hitachi did have more saturated colors.

One downside is that the WV600 series doesn't output native 720p -- any 720p source gets converted to 1080i. Whether 720p looks better or worse than 1080i seems to be open to some debate, but I have no input on this issue since I haven't seen 720p compared to 1080i.

Oh, a small percentage (according to Sony, about 1%) of these TVs get a "flicker" problem that needs servicing. Sony seems to have stepped up and is fixing any sets that get this problem, but since I have not experienced this flicker issue (knock on wood) I cannot comment personally on how Sony is handling the issue.

The sound quality from the built-in speakers is O.K. and is probably fine for anyone who doesn't have a Home Theater sound system. However, I suspect that most purchasers of a TV in this size range would have a Home Theater type of sound system so I spent very little time evaluating the sound quality of the tv speakers. It was almost immediately hooked up to my Denon reciever.

For video, you can control settings on a custom basis so that if you like certain color saturation and contrast for DVD viewing that's different from everyday broadcast television, you can have those separate settings.

This TV doesn't have PIP, it has Picture Next To Picture. In other words, you can have two screens that display right next to each other -- as if you had two 27" TV screens rather than one 65" screen. Each screen can be resized so that your important football game is large and you can see what's going on while a lesser baseball game is still viewable so you can switch to it when action starts. I like it much more than standard PIP displays.

One nice touch is that the TV has a Memory Stick slot. What this allows you to do is either directly use the MS from your Sony camera, or transfer pictures from another format (e.g., Compact Flash) to the stick and then display it directly on your 65" television. Let me tell you, 3 megapixel pictures dislayed on my Sony are FABULOUS.

The remote is just O.K. -- very much centered around Sony products and very little support for other brands. The TV is the only Sony product I own, so it's essentially worthless for anything but operating the television. Good thing I have a decent universal remote :)

For you techies out there, my TV has about 10% red push, scan velocity modulation can be (and is) turned off from the user menu, and the Sony DRC circuit is quite good at making broadcast signals (NTSC) cleaner and clearer.

In addition to my own opinions about the picture quality, I've had sereral friends over to my house who own Mitsubishi and Hitachi sets, and they have all commented on how good the display is. Again, AVIA calibration only, still waiting for ISF calibration.

Overall I am VERY happy with my purchase and although I would, of course, do another comparison, I think that if I had it to do over again, I'd buy this TV again.
