The Bottom Line:
If you're looking for a tube style HDTV, this is the best set on the market.
I spent several months shopping for a tube style HDTV. I am just not ready to dive into a projection set and plasmas are just way too expensive.
After first attempting to try a Samsung 32 inch HDTV (in an attempt to save some cash) I finally decided to pony up the extra 300-400 bucks or so to get this set. It was well worth the extra money.
The set is excellent in every respect. My DVDs are remarkably crisp and clean, and the picture required little calibration out of the box. You will want to be sure to turn down the brightness when you first power up the set, it makes a huge difference. I enjoy the dual tuner side by side picture functionality, but honestly I don't really use it too much. Also, if the picture appears tilted, Sony has a menu option to correct this. You'll notice any tilt issues when viewing a letterbox DVD.
Blooming (picture slightly changing size when going from dim to bright) is not really noticeable. Blooming is actually a very noticeable problem on many other tube style HDTVs I've seen. In fact, this set's picture quality is so high; if you subscribe to satellite TV you'll notice many compression artifacts. Images will appear a little blocky and smudged. This gets annoying at times, but it is a problem that originates with the satellite signal, not the Sony TV. It is something to be aware of, many HDTV consumers complain their satellite images look bad.
The sound is really nice. The set comes equipped with it's own subwoofer, so many times when I am watching it, I mistakenly think the audio from the set is going through my stereo.
The set has two sets of component video input in the back, including a DVI input. It also has 2 S-Video inputs in the back. For some reason, many comparable sets didn't have any S-video jacks on the back of the set, only on the side or front. This set also has a front mounted S-video and composite video and audio jacks as well.
I cannot comment on the HD aspects of the set, at least not yet. I do not have an HDTV tuner.
The set weighs a ton, so be sure to have at least two people on hand when unpacking it.
