SONY KV36XBR-250 - A Window to a New World

byweslake Feb 4, 2000
Pros Flat screen, incredible picture quality, plenty of features
Cons Only the names of 5 television stations can be remembered
Recommended it? Yes
I bought this TV for $1750 (wholesale price) in December of '99. It was a replacement for a Toshiba 36" television that got stolen by some thugs who broke into my house.

First of all, this television is HUGE!!! The box could barely fit through the door. Secondly, it is extremely heavy - 235 lbs!!! I bought the Sony stand for the television because of how heavy it is. It would crush the stand the Toshiba TV was on (and probably most normal television stands).

Once out of the box and sitting atop the stand, this television demands attention. It's almost like looking at a window, or portal, to another world.

Now, from what I've heard, most problems with the KV36-XBR250 TV occur when its power is turned on for the very first time. In a lot of instances, it does not come on. This did not happen with my new set. It instantly powered up and the picture was incredible! 36 diagonal inches of flat picture perfection. Regis was in my living room asking me if I wanted to be a millionaire, the Starship Voyager was flying directly at me, Shania Twain was intimately singing a song for me alone. And that was only through the cable!

What would the picture look like on DVD? I put the movie "The Matrix" in to check. The Matrix is an incredible DVD movie. Well the picture was awesome. So awesome in fact I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I was there, in the Matrix, dodging the bullets and using my kung fu skills.

And there are hundreds of great features on this TV. It has two tuner picture in picture, which is resizeable and movable throughout the screen. It's kind of handy.

You know how it is when you're flipping through stations and all you see in the number "42" and you start wondering, "What the heck is channel 42?". Well, with this TV you can make it so that not only does the number "42" appear, so will the letters "MTV", for example. But only 5 stations can be programmed this way. It's too bad that not all of them can be.

Other features include quick links to favourite stations using a joystick on the remote, the ability to change picture quality based on the type of television show you are watching, and the ability to make it so that the commercials and the television show are both actually at the same volume level.

Overall, this TV is great. I'm very impressed. I love my television. I know it will provide years and years of television viewing enjoyment!
