The Bottom Line:
Even though i am pleased with this model, I would not recommend it to anyone because of the minor problems I have had with it.
I purchased the Sony MHC-GX450 in late 2004, upgrading from an old Phillips stereo I had. I always wanted a Sony so i got one and am pleased with it despite its flaws.
First, lets look at the good points of this particular system. It was low priced for $189.00 at Wal-Mart. The sound quality is excellent and makes big sound from a smaller system. It has the VACS feature which minimizes distortion at high volumes, in other words it was designed to be cranked up and it does just that. I have played music very loud over the past three years and it still sounds good. The Groove button is also a nice feature, it turns up the power on the speakers and provides excellent sound and bass. The subwoofer which comes with it has an 8 inch cone and 150 watts of power, it flat out bumps. I also use this system for my listening to my TV which is plugged into the game input in the front, so it gets a lot of regular use. It also has a cooling fan in the unit which prevents it from getting hot. Its tape player and recorder also perform excellently. I also love the slightly adjustable equalizer on it so you can get the sound you want, I can't stand systems that have preset equalizers on them. That is one of the reasons I got this Sony.
Now despite everything I love about my Sony stereo, it does have some flaws. The volume control on the remote stopped working right a couple of months ago, it can only turn the volume up, not down, this is very frustrating. The equalizer seems to reset itself sometimes when I switch between sources such as tape, cd, tuner, and game. This is also frustrating at times.
Despite all of the flaws of this stereo, it has been good to me and I will keep it for years to come. If you are looking for a good minisystem i would recommend another Sony model, this one is no longer made. Also check out Panasonic.
