MZ-E75: Good Features, Even Better For The Price

Pros Battery Life, Dual Headphone Jack, New LCD Backlit Remote, Custom Equalizers
Cons Durability
Recommended it? Yes
Of the new Sony MiniDisc Portable Players, I feel that the MZ-E75 is the second best, behind the MZ-E90. It surpasses the MZ-E80, because I feel that Sony tried to make a cheaper version, with less features of the E90. The result was a poorly designed, flimsy MZ-E80.

The body of the MZ-E75, like the MZ-E80, is supposedly made of Magnesium alloy, like the MZ-E80 and the MZ-E90. However, like the MZ-E80, and unlike the MZ-E90, it seems somewhat stable when closed, but when it is open, it seems flimsy, like it will snap apart in any second. The MZ-E90 is extremely durable, and survived a fall from a 7 foot high wall unit to the marble floor below with NO DENTS. The MZ-E75, dented upon hitting the marble floor from only two feet.

However, it is extremely small, and the two line out?s (a.k.a. Dual Headphone Jack) really improves the quality of the player. The new LCD remote seems whiteish from afar, but upon closer inspection, it is a transparent clear. Also, the backlight feature really helps in poorly-lit areas.

Also, the battery life, which is advertised as 32 Hours, with both the rechargeable battery and the ?AA? battery is an overstatement. I found that the rechargeable battery, on a 2.5 hour full charge, will last about 9-10 hours, and the AA battery will last 17-19 hours. However, using the two in conjunction with each other, I have not reached the 30 hour mark. Despite that fact, the battery life is still superb, and compared to my MZ-EP11, which gets 5 hours to one AA, this is amazing.

The advertised 40 Second shock protection is legitimate; unlike the MZ-E80. Although when shaken with vigor, you hear it sliding back and forth in the carriage, it will hold about 40-45 seconds of memory before skipping.

Also, unlike the early MiniDisc Players, the MZ-E75 has a custom equalizer, allowing you to set the amount of digital bass boost. The MZ-E80 and other predecessors, only have Bass Boost OFF, Level 1 Bass Boost, and Level 2 Bass Boost.

If you didn?t tell from the review, I would definitely purchase the MZ-E75 over the MZ-E80. However, for another $100, you could purchase the MZ-E90, which is by far, the best player on the market. For people just joining the field of MiniDiscs, I would recommend this player to you, as it is simple to use, and it is small. However, for those who are looking for more in their player, I would advise saving up that extra $100 and getting a MZ-E90.
