Another Step in "MINI" disc Technology!

Pros Small size, light weight, long battery life
Cons Playback buttons difficult to operate
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Recommended for everyone because of its incredible portability and sound quality.
Fearing that my MZ-R90 might live a short life (I used it for both recording and listening), I decided to go out and get a play-only unit to share its workload. After some research plus my experience with Sony?s R90, I decided to go ahead and buy the Sony MZ-E90 unit. After hearing much praise about the E90, I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new pride and joy.

When the package finally traveled across the Pacific Ocean and made it to my front door, I couldn?t wait another second to open it and have my new toy in my hand. And upon taking it out of the box and placing it in my hand, I found that it deserve every praise I?ve heard and more!

The unit came with a LCD remote, a pair of headphones, a rechargeable NiMH battery, battery charger, carrying case, and instruction manual. On one side of the unit are the buttons for basic playback control (play/stop, FF/RE, ect). On the bottom of the unit are the slide buttons for AVLS (automatic volume limit system), 2 step digital MEGA bass, and hold. The hold button disables the playback controls, preventing accidental push of the controls.

Size and weight - One of the best things about the MD format is its small size and weight. And Sony had, and still does, place these two things at the top of its priority list when making new portable units. Every Sony portable MD player was the lightest and smallest at the time of its first release. And the E90 was no exception, as it inherits the family characteristics of being small and light-weight from it?s predecessors.. At 75.7 cubic cm (nearly the size of the minidisc with the protective case), this unit weights a mere 113g (including the internal battery). I carry this unit in my shirt pocket while commuting to work, and I can easily (and often do) forget its existence.

Sound ? On the spec sheet, the unit is said to have a Max output level of 5mW + 5mW. But what good do the numbers do if the sound quality isn?t up to par? The sound quality of this unit is nothing short of excellence. For ?near perfect? duplication of CD, it sure sounds perfect! While the bass boost (2 step digital MEGA bass) on this unit isn?t overwhelming, if you prefer original sound like myself, the bass of the E90 should be more than sufficient.

Battery Life ? One of the top reasons to get a portable play-only unit, even for those who own a portable record/play unit, is the battery life. The E90 provides 21 hours of playback on the rechargeable battery alone. If you attach the external AA battery with the rechargeable, the unit can provide you with a total of 56 hours of playback. However, I personally don?t use the external AA, as attaching it feels like the unit has doubled in weight. Besides, 21 hours of play back is plenty for me. And when the power does run out, it?s a mere 1.5 hours to fully recharge it.

Control ? This could be the only real con of the unit. The playback buttons located on the side of the unit are pretty small (at least for my big fat fingers they are) and hard to operate. This makes it difficult to operate the unit by using these buttons. However, since there is no display on the unit itself, you will almost always use the LCD remote, which is much easier when it comes button pushing.

The only real concern I had with this unit was the disc ejection process. When you slide the eject button to remove the disc, the top of the unit pops open with what seems to be a rather strong force. I was worried that the unit might break itself after sometime. However, I?m glad to report that after about 9 months of use, the unit is still intact and functioning perfectly. In short, this is a great unit for anyone, from the MD experts to those who are just starting to use this format. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!
