The Bottom Line:
I like this product very much. Should be used ones on the market, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy used.
My first foray into digital music involved the purchase of this little recorder. (I just bought a replacement turntable last year) I had planned to archive some of my vinyl collection before they turned to dust. The economics and editing time proved to be a deciding factor to my decision that it would be cheaper and less frustrating to by CD's.
When recording from vinyl on this recorder, you must record in standard mode to get decent sound quality (80 min max). LP2 and LP4 sound pretty bad when recording from vinyl. On the other hand I record a FM broadcast of a 5 hour blues show in LP4 and it sounds very good.
The LP4 mode for MP3's and and Digital recording from CD's sound flawless to my ears. Getting the optical PCLink and my Sound Blaster 5.1 audio card to coexist sometimes was a trial. (They finally agreed to a truce)
I have recorded MP3's, CD's, Vinyl, FM Broadcasts - edited results to Wave files converted to MP3's, Recorded from the attached AM/FM tuner to wave files. All seemed to sound very good. The battery life for this unit is astounding. I've had an alkaline battery last for two weeks using LP4 mode.
The only trouble I have had was when editing tracks on low battery power, all edits are lost if a shutdown occurs. It has to write the TOC (table of contents) sector before your edits are finalized. If it shuts down due to low battery power, it doesn't get done.
I've had a little trouble keeping the AC adapter plug plugged in. It seems to migrate out.
Very nice unit, I haven't been able to make this skip. This with driving down gravel roads at time.
I would recommend buying the newer 2002(?) units that can record up to 8X speed. (Or you can set up an extensive playlist and record while you sleep)
I'm very happy with this purchase.
