The Sony MZ-N1 is the flagship model of its new "Net MD" range of portable MD players, merging the traditional benefits of MiniDisc with the portability and ease of use of Web-sourced MP3 files. NetMD is also Sony's latest attempt to kickstart flagging MiniDisc sales in the US, where the format... Read full review »

I purchased the Sony MZ-N1 Minidisc Player/Recorder as a replacement for my Sony MZ-R900. I bought it from an internet retailer before it came out for North America. At first glance, the unit is made out of magnesium-alloy. It is available in 2 colors, silver and dark blueish purple. It is lighter... Read full review »

Is all of this enough?

Pros Nice LCD display, high-speed download interface with PCs, etc.
Cons complex menu settings, lack of dedicated buttons, buttons too close together, etc.
Recommended it? Yes

If you're shopping for an MD unit, and you're not sure what name to go with (particularly, Sharp and Sony, as they seem to be the two most popular), the Sony MZ-N1 and Sharp IM-MT880 are direct "rival" units. The Sharp MT880 has the USB jack on the actual body (the Sony N1 requires you to dock the... Read full review »

Pros Small, light, easily put into pocket, and great sound.
Cons Can't download from MD to CD.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought this mini-disc for one main purpose, which was to download live recordings onto a CD.

Background

Since moving into a new Church I have been involved in the recording of the services and live music concerts. The equipment put into the Church was a mini-disc and a tape... Read full review »

Pros Tiny size, impressive build quality, LP2 recording mode
Cons OpenMG SUCKS!!! LCD screen not backlit.
Recommended it? Yes

I have owned minidisc players since 1995, and I have to say that I'm a huge fan. I've never been interested in MP3 players because the ones that are small enough to interest me generally can't store enough music and the ones that can store substantial amounts of music are too big for me. I want... Read full review »

Pros Light, compact, remote, sound quality
Cons OpenMG, erasing/blank disc, price, many alternatives
Recommended it? No

I bought a MZ-N1 in the summer of 2002 and I loved it. It was compact, light, played music perfectly, and had the easy to use remote to switch between songs, put on repeat, shuffle, etc. The main MD has a 3 line LCD that has a blue back light, very easy to read, and next to the LCD are the controls... Pros Cool Factor. Size. Battery life. Sound Quality. Recording capabilities.
Cons No upload to computer. Software stinks.
Recommended it? Yes

I bought the MZ-N1 about 3 weeks ago, and have run it through its paces quite a bit. The size is impressive, and it looks great. It comes with a nice remote that has a lot of functions for use during playback, but you can't access any recording functions with it. I had to get a 90 degree adapter... Read full review »

Sony quality dropping?

Pros Good values, slim body, light weight, never skip (even when I'm running)
Cons not up to top standard quality control and construction
Recommended it? Yes

I got the Sony N1 for about two weeks, it work fine, but the construction is questionable. The top body cover got pressed a mark. Line in/out plug hole not aligned correctly with the casing. Just fell that Sony's high quality is gone. Watch carefully and test it before you buy. Otherwise, you risk... Read full review »

MZN1 - a brief prototype

bygottleib1123 Jan 3, 2003

Pros convenient
Cons It has buggy restrictive software
Recommended it? No

The software will refuse to recognise some tracks on a CD ('no codec' - help file gives no clues either) Some CDs or MP3's are rejected entirely. Simply speaking, it has poor usability, very poor documentation, help software or knowledgeable telephone support. When the bugs emerge, you are on your... Read full review »
