Perfect MD let down by software

Pros Excellent sound on recordings and playback, ligthweight, skip-free, good battery life.
Cons Sony's OpenMg software is horribly tiresome, restrictive and invades your computer.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  This MD sounds exellent and is a fine little instrument. But is does not do a good job as a NetMD and doesn't allow you much flexibillity managing your files.
I bought this MD because I was in need of a high-quality stereo live-recorder, mp3 burner and good quality portable sound. I did a lot of research, listening and ended up buying this little thing.

My review is very simple. The hardware itself is not to put a finger on. The sound is crisp, clear and has a good and balanced base. The original earphones are mediocre, but that's the usual deal and expected. Now to the bad part.

Sony's software is a challenge to you and will certainly spoil any classes of meditation that you may have enrolled in. Here is why: You cannot digitally upload your recorded stereo recordings. That's just plain annoying now that you have such a splendid hi-fi recording there on your MD. Secondly you may only download the same MP3 file three times to your MD before the software blocks for further transfers of this particular file. You may avoid this by making sure to upload the exact same file to your computer from your MD after use - this way you still have tree downloads left for this file. But really.....

As far as the usabillity goes, the sofware is really just clunky and not very intuitive. But where this is overcome by experience, the slow transfer is permanent and quite a drag in comparison with other file-transfers using USB 1.

If you want a good sounding MD player that can make stereo recordings and if you are not too concerned about transfering Mp3's back and forth between your PC and NetMd, the MZ-N707 may be a choice for you. On the other hand, you'll find many other and cheaper MD's out there that can do just that.
If you, on the other hand, intend to buy this MD solely for the purpose of burning your Mp3's into a portable device, you may seriously think about buying a Mp3-player instead to avoid the tiresome proprietary software from Sony.
