A great choice, if not a little complicated.
Pros
Sounds great, compact, many MANY features, durable.
Cons
Too complicated, bad display.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Sony MZ-R37 is everything a good MD player should be: Slim, Compact, Tough and reliable. It also sounds great, which is probably the most important thing!
So why buy the MZ-R37? Well, it is probably one of the best choice for its price range (suggested price is $200, but I got it from Circuit City for $175). The MZ-R37 is also a great choice for those looking for a player with a lot of features. This player has a lot of nice little features for customizing how it sounds and how to record. The player itself seems physically tough, too. Once, on a class trip, I kept the player in a little pouch on my hip. I accidentally bumped it into the corner of a table. I thought to myself: ?Oh boy, I just crushed my $180 MD player?. But it didn?t seem to hurt the player. The actual frame didn?t have any evidence of damage, and the player has functioned well ever since.
I also appreciate how slim and compact the MZ-R37 is. Granted, it isn?t the smallest. I admit that the battery compartment is bigger than it should be. Besides that, the unit is small enough. It should fit into even the smallest pocket, and it defiantly won?t bulge out (?Is that your new MZ-R37 or are you just glad to see me?").
As mentioned before, the player has a lot of nice features. There are a lot of different recording methods. The player also features the popular Synchronized Recording method. You can program the unit to repeat, shuffle, etc. There is also a cool feature that I personally appreciated called ?Digital Mega Bass?. It does a GREAT job at making it sound rich. This should appeal to anyone who is considering buying a MD player.
Alas, the MZ-R37 does have its downsides. As soon as I took it out of the box, I knew I was in for big learning curve. I have owned a MD player before, and it still confused me. I like all of the little features, but they ARE hard to understand at first. Editing and deleting tracks seem unnecessarily difficult, also. It is REALLY easy to accidentally delete the entire disc when you only meant to delete one track.
The biggest learning curve had to be the recording feature. The whole recording system seems awkward and slow. There are too many buttons to press, compared to other MD players. The MZ-R37?s recording SOUNDS great, though, but it will take you a LONG time to learn how to get it that way!
Another downside to the MZ-R37 is the screen. The good folks at Sony really should have made it bigger, even if that WOULD make the actual player bigger. All of the icons are small and blurry, and the small text is hard to see. On top of it, the screen had horrible contrast. All the text and icons look like black on a dark-gray background. You really have to squint to see what the unit is trying to tell you. And you can forget trying to read ANYTHING in poor lighting conditions.
The MZ-R37 does have its downsides. Of course, nothing it perfect! All this aside, I would definitely recommend this MD player to anyone. It is a great buy for its price range. There are very few other players that are a better choice than the MZ-R37. I would recommend it to anyone!
Thanks for reading my reviews, guys! Peace
