Featured packed MD Player/Recorder
Pros
Great design, neat features
Cons
A little heavy, lack of MD selection
Recommended it?
Yes
In this day and age it takes quite a bit to impress your average technophile. But Sony has a knack for combining stylish design and electronic wizardry in a must-have package.
The MZ-R55 is a little more than 2 inches square, and extremely thin. It both plays and records MD's. It has a new optical digital jack into which you can plug both analog and digital inputs (from a CD player for example).
Recording is easy - you can literally set up and start in seconds. You can record from a multitude of sources - analog, digital, microphone - and name it into cd-like tracks. You can also shuffle these tracks around after they've been recorded.
Playback is equally good. The sound quality is prime for most pop/other music, though classical music-buffs might notice that the ATRAC compression is a hair more limited than CD. Unlike the vast majority of CD players, this MD will never skip - I've dropped mine while it's playing, and it never missed a beat... no pun intended. And you get four hours of playback on a single charge.
Attached to the headphone chord is a nifty little controller with which you can control virtually all the functions of your MD. So you can keep it in your pocket and never have to worry about it.
One concern is definitely the availability of pre-recorded MD's - currently they are not widely available. But I use my MD mostly for recording my own CD's, so it's not that much of an issue.
In short, this is the best method of portable music I've found. If you like recording your own music, this is the way to go.
