The Sony MZ-R55 isn't a great portable recorder, but it isn't bad either. I personally like it because of its small size, and because I can bring this anywhere I want. This thing beats the Rio by all odds. I have now stopped using my Rio and now I use minidisc only.
The only drawback of this specific portable recorder is the battery life. 2 1/2 hours on record, and about 4 hours on playback. It takes 3 hours to charge the battery. Unless you have a lot of dry cells or have extra NiMH batteries, then you should be ready to charge it day and night if you use it frequently.
Overall, I'd give this a 4 out of 5. It's a good player, but this seems to the the only Sony one that has horrible battery life.
