It's changed the way I listen to music!

Pros Great sound; Light weight; Ability to store 5 hours of music on one disc!
Cons Not enough memory on disks to store lengthy titles for all tracks
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a great device that all home recorders should consider. Its price may seem hefty, but it is well worth it.
I had just gotten into burning my own CD mixes when I purchased a Sony mini-disc player, and I have not burned a CD since! CD's only hold approximately 76 minutes of music. With mini-disc, you can store up to 5 hours of music on one disc! There's a lot you can do with that time. You can create your own "Best of" compilations of your favorite artists, create mixes of various artists, record several albums or CD's onto one disc, and so much more. And if you change your mind, you can always delete a single track, or change the order of the tracks.

Unfortunately, I think most people will completely overlook the potential of this device. Yes, it comes with a digital PC link so you can record downloads and MP3's, but if you have the appropriate cables you can hook up your stereo system and record from various formats: CD, vinyl, cassette, radio, DVD, 8-track, reel-to-reel, whatever. As someone who owns over 1000 vinyl records, I am delighted that I can record them onto something other than a cassette tape. Searching for a specific track is as easy on the mini-disc player as it is on a CD player.

As for the sound quality, it is crystal clear. It will perfectly reproduce the sound of the original recording. So yes, this means if you are recording from vinyl you will hear the pops and hisses, but then again, that was part of the charm of vinyl, wasn't it?

Now for the problems: one of the great features is that you can label each track. But my biggest gripe is that if you have a lot of tracks on the disc, you may run out of labeling room, for there are only so many characters that can be stored in the disc's memory.

Another problem is that the worst recordings may, ironically, come when recording MP3's, because during playback you occasionally get those little "skips", and those skips will make their way onto the recording.

And I see that many of the other reviews of this device mention that the headphones are cheap. Maybe, but it's pretty easy to get yourself a good pair of headphones at decent price these days.

These problems, however, do not take away from the fact that mini-disc players are a must for those who take home recording seriously. You'll simply never settle for cassette recording or CD burning again.
