This is the best value in MD.
Pros
Small, Lightweight, Super Quality, 40s Antiskip, Great Bass, Fair price
Cons
Much heavier than MP3. Have a hard time jogging with it because pants get weighed down :(
Recommended it?
Yes
I have been looking for an MD player/recorder for some time and I have known, as many do, that the SONY brand of MDs are the best by far. I have tried the SHARPs and the AIWAs and the other brands out there but lets face it, no company out there can out-walkman the Walkman.
It turns out that the only models I even tried to choose from were ALL sony. I looked at the higher end models including the new 900 that is not even out in North America yet!! This one is AWESOME! But the price tag is scary.
The models I narrowed my search down to were the R55, R70, and the R90. As it turns out, the R55 is a very good unit. It is small, has an LCD display and a good design in terms of button placement. The only problem is, for some reason, it seems as though SONY is discontinuing the model. I could be wrong. The R-70 also appeared to be a great buy, but there was one major problem that I could not deal with: The remote. The remote on the R70 is a flimsy, lightweight plastic piece of junk, really. It does not even have an LCD display and for the money you spend and the brand you are paying for, this proves to be a fatal flaw in the design.
On the other hand, the R90 is superb. Yes I know what you are going to say: It is the top of the line Sony. And you are right, it is. But for the money, it is definitely the best value on the market. It has a great size, weight and look. The discs playback with almost 100% CD quality and the optical cable is included for digital attachment to your other devices (like an MD player or a stereo or even a sound card like the Sound Blaster Live! (with Digital I/O Card)).
It also seems a little strange that some people I have seen have different types of earphones than the picture shown for this device. Some people have backphones which are headphones that come from around the back of the head so as not to disturb your hair. The picture shows bud - earphones and yet still others show the normal bud headphones.
I bought this player/recorder because I knew it was the best that Sony was offering, and considering that SONY offered the best MD players at the time, I am pleased with my decision. I like the fact that I can actually place this into my pocket and walk around and it will never skip because it has a 40s Antiskip system built in.
The only thing I do not like about the unit is that it is quite a bit heavier than an MP3 player such as the Nomad 2 MG which also contains voice record capabilities.
All in all, this is a great unit and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in a player recorder.
