We have had the playstation for about 2 years now,I purchased for my husband for Christmas that year.My husband at the time was 33 years old,my brother who was 31 at the time use to invite my husband over to his house all the time to play games on this system and the nintendo system. My husband liked the playstation better so this was the top gift on my list to buy for him.
Christmas morning came and my husband was very excited when he opened the game system. The game system came with one controller and a sample disc that enabled him to try out a variety of games.I did not purchase a game for him because I knew my two brothers were buying him games and he would get them later. My husband could not wait to try out his new game and proceeded to hook it up and try out his sample disc. The hook up to the TV was very easy and once done he was ready to go.My husband tried the different games and played for a good hour or so until I dragged him away to help me get ready for the family coming over.
As soon as my brothers came over they gave him their gifts-2 games and that was about the last we saw of them for hours. They were hooked, and I was like you guys are like little kids,it is just a video game.My husband tried to explain to me how good the game was and wanted me to come and watch them play, I excused myself from the family to go see what the hoopla was all about.
I am not much of a game person but I had to admit that the game was great-the visual effects and sound were like you were right in a game room(the last game I played before this was the Atari).Anyway, I cannot remember which game it was but after about 10 minutes of watching the game I began to feel funny, like my body was a little off and I quickly went to lay down in my room.Within 2 minutes of leaving the room I felt better,I was a little confused to why I was feeling as I did because I did recognize the feeling but not the reason for the feeling.I asked my husband for the directions for the game-he gave them to me but looked puzzled over why I wanted them.
There on the first page of the directions to the game is a warning listed by the company and the answer to my question. It is as follows:
" A very small percentage of individuals may experience epileptic seizures when exposed to certain light patterns or flashing lights.Exposure to certain patterns or backgrounds on a television screen or while playing video games including games played on Playstation game console, may induce an epileptic seizure in these individuals. Certain conditions may induce previously undetected epileptic symptoms even in persons who have no history of prior seizures or epilepsy..If you or anyone in your family has an epileptic condition, consult your physician prior to playing. If you experience any of the following symptoms while playing a video game--dizziness,altered vision, eye or muscle twitches, loss of awareness, disorientation, any involuntary movement,or convulsions--IMMEDIATELY discontinue use and consult your physician before resuming play."
The strange feeling I felt came from watching the game-I have epilepsy-I knew this before watching the game but never thought that the screen from the game would cause any thing like a seizure. It had been quite a while since I had had a seizure and when I got them frequently I could sometimes feel when one was coming on.I would get a feeling, a strange feeling that something was off inside of me.Since I excused myself from the game, I did not have a full seizure so I was glad about that.
While my husband still plays this game and enjoys it I do not participate while he is playing-I stay out of the room and let him have fun-we did buy some Elmo,Sesame street games for my three year old daughter to play on the system and she seems to enjoy it.She does not have epilepsy as of yet and may never have it, but I did not start experiencing seizures until I was about 20 years old.
My whole point is that you never know what kind of danger a game console can cause-and if you are prone to seizures this may not be the right thing to buy.Check with your doctor if you have any of these problems.
For my husband, this is the greatest system on earth because the graphics and sound are exceptional. He especially likes that there are so many games available. My husband likes the golf games and driving games like Destruction Derby, etc.The game only came with one controller so he did have to purchase another one for an extra 19.99.We also purchased a memory card for another $19.99, which enables him to save games.
My husband did have one problem with the game system after about one year of owning it, the CD was not playing right. We called the store we bought the system from and the person who worked there told us that this is a common problem with the playstation system but can be remedied quickly by doing the following:
Turn the game off, turn the whole game console upside down and then turn it on again-then slowly turn the game console so that it rests on its side.We did this and it worked perfectly, my husband does have to do this sometimes but not always.
Overall this is a great game system for any age bracket as long as you do not experience any medical problems while playing it. If you have any doubt as to whether you may be at risk for experiencing any symptoms you may want to check with your physician.
