A beautifully made piece of equipment but the DVD+RW record & edit options are limited

Limited editing functions with DVD+RW and won't record 16:9 pictures on DVD+RW.

The Bottom Line:
I would recommend another unit that has full realization of the DVDplusRW format.
I purchased the Sony RDR-GX7 because it is a dual RW (DVD-WR and DVD+RW) compatible home DVD recorder. Like so many other people interested in essentially replacing the VCR, I wasn't convinced which was the better or more suitable DVD format. Other manufacturers only offered either DVD-RW or DVD+RW compatibility. The Sony unit however claimed to offer compatibility with both formats. It was therefore a logical choice for a newcomer like myself. Now that I have fully read the instruction manuals and used this recorder with both types of disks I'm now able to offer an informed review. Firstly I was pleased with the ease of installation. I followed the 'Easy Setup' procedure and in a short time I was actually ready to start recording. I inserted a DVD+RW disk and it was automatically formatted. Because it all went so easily, I was almost nervous to press the record button. I followed the instructions on how to record from equipment connected to the LINE IN jacks and the result was a near perfect title that played back perfectly on my LG player and on my PC. I then recorded from other sources and new titles were automatically created for each recording session. The on-screen Graphical User Interface and remote control was so simple and intuitive to use. Then it came to editing and this is where the Sony RDR-GX7 has limitations with DVD+RW disks. You cannot manually insert chapter markers and you cannot partially overwrite titles. For this you need to use the DVD-RW VR format and it is currently hampered with other player incompatibility problems. So I went back to the DVD+RW disk and noted that the Sony RDR-GX7 would not allow me to record 16:9 size pictures on the DVD+RW disk. This is when I got a little frustrated...
